Many a companion in my little band—I halted with him
And a companion among a few friends, with whom I camped
at Zarūd, while the billows of night swept over us.
at Zarud, while the wave of night engulfed us,

He folded an arm and let the trailing ends of his locks fall
bent his arm and cast his trailing locks
upon the dune, hollow-bellied and famished.

نادَيتُهُ بَعدَما مالَ الجَنوبُ بِهِ
أَباO Abu نَعامَةَNa‘ama أَبرَدناwe have reached the cool hours قُمِrise الآناnow
أَبا نَعامَةَ أَبرَدنا قُمِ الآنا
I called to him after the south wind had made him droop:
I called to him after the south wind had swayed him:
“O Abū Nuʿāmah, we have reached the cool of evening—get up now!”
“Abu Na‘ama, we have reached the cool hours—rise now!”

لا يُرسِلُ الطَرفَ إِلّا عادَ وَسنانا
He rose, though sleep still lay flung within his eye sockets;
So he rose, while sleep lay sprawled in his eye sockets;
whenever he sent his gaze forth, it came back drowsy.
whenever he cast his gaze, it returned drowsy.

He lagged behind while the caravan’s mounts went on—
He lagged behind while the caravan's mounts moved on—
what folly! A man’s reason had surely been clouded over.
a fool! Surely the man's wits had grown clouded.

He longed for sleep, as though the sand beneath him had been laid
He loved slumber, as though the sand had spread for him
as cushions by the daughter of Manẓūr ibn Zabbān.
the cushions of the daughter of Manzur ibn Zabban.
