وَتَغَيَّرَتand have changed بِمَذاعِهاthrough their disclosure الأَسرارُthe secrets
Hearts have drawn far away, and the dwelling too shall draw far away.
The hearts have grown distant, and the dwelling too will grow distant.
And secrets have changed through being divulged.
And secrets have changed through their disclosure.

I split open Time’s very entrails, yet there was
Indeed, I split open Time's entrails, yet there was
nothing concealed within but separation’s secret.
nothing concealed within it but the secret of separation.
ماwhat لِلخُطوبِwith calamities تَبُزُّنيstrip me of ثَوبَthe robe of الهَوىlove

Why do calamities wrest from me the robe of love,
Why do calamities strip me of love's robe
when their vicissitudes have already clothed me in rags?
while I am clad in rags from their afflictions?

Calamities have grown accustomed to my inmost heart, as though it were
Adversities have grown familiar with my heart, as though they were
a racecourse for the thoroughbred steeds of anguish.
a racecourse for the thoroughbred steeds of anguish.

Why do I let tears trickle for you—tears from which
Why do I let tears shimmer for you, from which
calamities drink their fill, though no honey-gatherer draws them?
calamities drink their fill, though no honey-gatherer harvests them?

Enough, O my hope of Ṭayyiʾ—never break
Enough, Mu’ammil of Tayy—do not unravel
a bond of love perpetuated by my pledged honor.
a bond of love, tightly twined by a pledge.
فَلَقَدfor indeed حَلَلتَyou have settled مِنَwithin الفُؤادِthe heart مَحَلَّةًa dwelling
فيin حَيثُa place where لَيسَthere is no مِنَamong الوَرىhumankind لَكَfor you جارُneighbor
For you have taken a dwelling place within my heart,
For you have indeed settled in a dwelling within my heart,
where no mortal is your neighbor.
where none of humankind is a neighbor to you.
فَلَئِنso if indeed وَفَيتَyou keep faith فَماthen not الوَفاءُfidelity بِبِدعَةٍa novelty at all
إِنَّindeed الوَفاءَfidelity لِذيfor one with الصَفاءِpurity شِعارُa hallmark
If you are faithful, fidelity is nothing unprecedented:
So if you keep faith, fidelity is no novelty;
fidelity is the intimate emblem of one possessed of purity.
indeed, fidelity is the hallmark of the pure-hearted.
وَلَئِنand if indeed غَدَرتَyou betray وَلاand no عَجيبٌwonder أَنَّهُthat it is
بَعضُone part of الزَمانِTime بِبَعضِهِtoward another part of it غَدّارُhabitually treacherous
But if you betray, there is no wonder, for
And if you betray, it is no wonder that
one part of Time is treacherous to another.
one part of Time is treacherous toward another.
نَفسيmy soul فِداءُa ransom for الغادِرينَthe faithless تَباعَدواthey draw far away

My soul be ransom for the faithless, whether they keep far away
My soul be ransom for the faithless, whether they draw far away
or draw near, whether they act justly or wrong me.
or draw near, whether they deal fairly or act unjustly.
