أَصَمَّa deaf one لاnot يَسمَعُhears صَوتَthe voice of الراقيthe charmer
You have roused within me, O Abu al-Ghaydaq,
a deaf one who cannot hear the charmer's voice:
صِلَّan asp of صَفاًrock مُلَعَّنَaccursed in البُصاقِspittle
ريقَتُهُits saliva تَهزَأُmocks بِالدِرياقِat the antidote
a rock-dwelling asp, its spittle accursed,
whose saliva mocks the antidote.
كَأَنَّهُas though it أُمَّwere brain-wounded مِنَfrom الإِطراقِbowing the head
تَلقىencounter الرِجالُmen عِندَهُbefore it المَلاقيordeals
As though brain-wounded, so bowed is its head;
men meet dire ordeals before it.
يَنظُرُgazes مِنthrough عَينٍan eye بِلاwithout حِملاقِan inner eyelid
إِنif نامَit sleeps لاnot يَكلَؤُهاit guards it بِماقِwith an eye-corner
It gazes through an eye without an eyelid;
if it sleeps, it shields it with no eye-corner.

Its tracks on rocky hills and stony flats
halt the riders in their swift advance.
يَشُمُّsniffs مِنكَon you مَوضِعَthe place of النِطاقِthe girdle
بِوَخزَةٍwith a stab مِنfrom ذَرِبِa keen fang حَذّاقِsharp-cutting
It sniffs out where your girdle lies,
with a stab from a keen, cutting fang,
يَكتُمُهُit conceals it فيin هَرِتِthe gaping breadth of الأَشداقِthe jaws
لَيُّكَyour recoil مِنfrom حَديدَةِthe blade of الحَلّاقِthe barber
which it conceals within its gaping jaws.
You recoil from the barber's blade.

You see on throat-hollows and collarbones
a greasy coating of its outpoured venom.
مِثلَlike القَذىa mote لَجلَجَshifted about فيin المَآقيthe eye-corners

يَنحُبُmakes sob بِالماضيfor the departed جَنانَthe heart of الباقيthe survivor
Like a mote shifting within the eye-corners,
it makes the survivor's heart sob for the departed.
رِزقُكَyour portion أَدَّتهُdelivered it يَدُthe hand of الخَلّاقِthe Creator
لَكِنَّهُbut it مُرٌّbitter مِنَamong الأَرزاقِallotted portions
Your portion, delivered by the Creator's hand,
but a bitter one among allotted portions.

His hour has come, unless a protector shields him:
whoever seeks, ignorant of what awaits him,

Did no hindrance keep you from me today,

till you met 'the she-kid's two ears'—a calamity?
I shall sing of you among traveling companions,

a driving-song like that for great camels across barren plains,
loading the she-camels' withers

نَهزاًa goading سَيُجليهاwill drive them away إِلىto العِراقِIraq
with stinging words that will endure:
a goading that will drive them on to Iraq.

I have indeed climbed, after my leg's weakness,
heights whose climbing paths are slippery.

I stood exposed to thunder and lightning,
facing the flood-course of the downpouring cloud.

You patch your tattered reputation,
as you reinforced a sandal with an added sole.

Beware a whetted, keen-edged satire,
that lifts the curtain's edge away from you:

حَتّىeven عَلىupon الآذانِthe ears وَالأَحداقِand pupils

onslaughts with their tethers severed,
even upon ears and eyes,

tearing out the rootstocks, roots and all.
Before them, the freeborn flee like runaway slaves.

I bind them where collars are worn;
they leave a lasting brand upon the necks,
مِثلَlike وُسومِthe brands of الإِبِلِcamels المَناقيwell-fattened
نَزيعَةٌa foreign captive مِنfrom جَلَبِthe traded stock of العِراقِIraq
like the brands upon well-fattened camels.
A foreign captive from Iraq's traded stock,

kept for other than smelling and embracing.
You push it away, yet it clings fast;

ringworm does not come off with spittle.
They have clamored against your threadbare reputations.

I cleave the skulls of cunning men,
and today finish off the last remnants of life.

Never trust fire not to burn.
All this, while my arrows for you are only being nocked—

what, then, when I draw the bow and pull it to the full?
