my keen blade would never rest within its sheath.

An ambition as far-reaching as the sky, and like the wind

    blowing through every east and west;

and a longing for the heights that weans the pale camels

from watering, amid water and grass.

he sees good fortune as the enemy of reason and understanding.

Shall I relish a station short of eminence,

before leaving the swords, like their own slain,

casualties of the heat of clashing and blows?

It is weakness, if resolve calls upon you,

for the sword to find you unresponsive.

he is enough for me, and my blade's edge makes peace with the sheath.

and great one, reverence for whom fills my heart,

and aided me against every calamity.

If a king seeks to bring me close,

I say: my closeness to the caliph is enough for me.

My verse yields to none but you, and has always

    remained proud, defying every calamity.

What a champion your two cloaks enclose, while Time

stands empty-handed, bereft of every champion!

Whether with a hand that safeguards aspirations and hopes,

you care not on which of your two days you set forth:

a day of giving wealth or a day of war.

How many a morning had its dawn dressed in mourning,

woven by the forelegs of lean, far-brought steeds.

Swords appear within it, then vanish,

and spearplay flares within it, then goes dark.

of my heart and mind with remembrance of you that day.

    without delighting and kindling love.

It leaves you, awaiting its meeting

with you a year hence, out of a lover's ardent devotion.

the finest garment is one that covers my heels.

my words and prolonging my reproach.

I have an illness whose cure is you, if you would draw

near; but where is the physician for one seeking healing?

How can I accept thirst in my heart, while before my eyes

shines the lightning of the lingering raincloud?

A glance from you sends water through my stem,

lengthens my shade, and makes my soil sprout.

    أَيُرَجّى القِطارُ مِن غَيرِ سُحبِ

    I have hoped for no generosity but yours;

can rain be hoped for from anything but clouds?

Do not leave me between hopes and despair,

while my draught lies between bitter and sweet.

    نِ فَما الشِعرُ جُلَّ مالي وَكَسبي

    And cast me from your hands onto one of the two roads;

for poetry is not the bulk of my wealth and earnings.

And if a need lies beyond my asking

of you, it lies not beyond my force and keen blade.
