Restrain your reproach unless a fault has occurred;
Some reproach is suspect in its sincerity.
ماwhat ليwith me أَقولُI speak فَلاyet not تُصغيyou listen بِسامِعَةٍwith an ear

تَصامُمٌfeigned deafness بِكَin you عَنto ذاthis القَولِspeech أَمor صَمَمُdeafness
How is it that I speak, yet you lend no ear?
Are you feigning deafness to these words, or truly deaf?
رِفقاًgently بِأَنفِكَwith your nose لاdo not تَشمَخraise yourself haughtily عَلىabove مُضَرٍMudar

Spare your nose; do not lift it proudly above Mudar.
And see with your own eyes those who were haltered and those who were bridled.
فَلَستَfor you are not أَوَّلَthe first مَنone who راقَتwere pleasing لَهُto him حُلَلٌfine robes

For you are not the first to delight in fine robes,
Nor are you the first whose herds have returned at dusk.

Whoever harbors estrangement from one who harbors none,
unjustly, will find remorse walking through the recesses of his heart.
مَنwhoever أَنهَضَتهُspurred him لِقَطعِto sever الوُدِّaffection عُذرَتُهُhis excuse

He whose excuse spurs him to sever affection—
His hand and foot alike deserve reproach.

Whoever thinks ill of one he loves will part from him,
And suspicions will urge him to drive him away.

فَإِنَّthen indeed عَهديmy pledge عَلىagainst غَدرٍtreachery بِكُمtoward you حَرَمُa sacred precinct
Should the hidden heart of your pledge ever rush into treachery,
My pledge is a sacred precinct, closed to treachery against you.
يَصُدُّturns away عَنِّيَfrom me مَنone who وُدّيmy love لَهُfor him صَدَدٌclose at hand

The one who has my love close at hand turns away from me,
Yet I do not seek the one who has my love within easy reach.
