May no rebel gain an opening against you,
And may your foes never seek what you have sought.

وَحَوضُكَand your basin مَلآنٌfull وَرَوضُكَand your meadow مُعشِبُlush with grass
Your cloud overflows, your breeze is fresh,
Your basin is full, your meadow lush with grass.
إِذاwhen قُلتُI speak فيكَabout you الشِعرَpoetry جَوَّدَexcels مادِحٌa praiser
وَأَكثَرَand speaks abundantly وَصّافٌa describer وَأَعرَقَand goes far مُطنِبُan expansive praiser
When I speak verse of you, a praiser excels,
A describer says much, an expansive praiser goes far.
وَغَيرُكَand anyone but you لاnot أُطريهِI extol him إِلّاexcept تَكَلُّفاًwith strain
وَغَيرُand anything but حَنينيmy yearning عِندَwith غَيرِكَanyone but you مُصحِبُpliant
Others I praise only by straining;
My yearning alone will not yield to anyone but you.
بَغيضٌhateful إِلىto الأَيّامِthe days أَنَّكَthat you are ليfor me حِمىًa sanctuary
وَغَيظُand a vexation to بَنيthe sons of الأَيّامِthe days أَنَّكَthat you are ليfor me أَبُa father
The days hate that you are my sanctuary,
And the sons of the days rage that you are my father.

مُناسِبُthe lineages of مَنthose who يُعزىare ascribed لِمَجدٍto glory وَيُنسَبُand traced in descent
After the Prophet and the Legatee, can I admire
The lineages of those ascribed and traced to glory?
يُقِرُّacknowledges بِفَضليmy merit كُلُّevery بادٍnomad وَحاضِرٍand townsman

Every nomad and townsman acknowledges my merit,
Yet this great, veiled man envies me.
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِأَنwill ensure that يَشتاقَhe longs for ماwhat أَناI قائِلٌam saying
وَيَسمَعَand hears مِنّيfrom me ماwhat يَروقُcharms وَيُعجِبُand delights
Who will find me one who longs for what I say,
And hears from me what charms and delights?
وَلَولاand were it not for جَزاءُthe recompense for الشِعرِpoetry مِمَّنfrom those who يُريدُهُseek it
وَجَدتُI would find كَثيراًmany مَنwhom أُغَنّيI sing to وَيَطرَبُand who rejoice
Were it not for verse's reward from those who desire it,
I would find many to sing to who would delight in it.
أَلاindeed إِنَّtruly راعيthe keeper of الذَودِthe small camel herd يُعنىcares بِذَودِهِfor his herd

Indeed, the keeper of a camel herd tends his herd
With protective care; the shepherd of men is bewildered and far astray.

I love you all while I am counted among you,
And while I have in you an aim and a quest.

عَلىin كُلِّevery حالٍcondition نازِحُdistant الوِدِّin affection أَجنَبُa stranger
As for the dwelling that does not hold you, I am
Always distant in affection, a stranger.
فَلاso do not تَترُكَنّيleave me عاطِلاًdevoid مِنof مُروَّةٍmanly honor
وَلاand not قانِعاًcontent بِالدونِwith the paltry أَرضىI am pleased وَأَغضَبُand I am angered
Do not leave me bereft of manly honor,
Nor content with the paltry, now pleased, now angered.
فَماfor not أَناI بِالوانيflagging إِذاwhen ماever دَعَوتَنيyou summon me

I do not flag whenever you summon me,
Nor is my stand a secret: you have witnessed it.
أَماis there no ليfor me قَرارٌa settled place فيin نَعيمٍease وَلَذَّةٍand pleasure

فَإِنِّيَfor I فيin الضَرّاءِadversity أَطفوfloat وَأَرسُبُand sink
Have I no settled place in ease and pleasure?
For in adversity I float and sink.
أُريدُI desire مِنَfrom اللَهِGod القَضاءَa decree بِحالَةٍof a condition
تَقَرُّfinds rest بِهاthrough it عَينٌan eye وَقَلبٌand a heart مُعَذَّبُtormented
I ask God to decree a state
In which an eye and a tormented heart find rest.
وَأَسأَلُand I ask أَنthat يُعطيكَHe grant you فيin العُمرِlife فَسحَةًample span

And I ask that He grant you ample length of life,
For I know that life is granted and bestowed.
