I sharpened a keen point for this spear,
And made a gleam run through this Indian blade.

And I gave this noble steed free rein; I only
Opened a path for it, and it trotted and galloped.

If indeed the portents of a raincloud flash from me,
For your eyes' sake it resolves to rain freely and abundantly.
فَلَيسَfor it is not بِساقٍone to water قَبلَbefore رَبعِكَyour dwelling مَربَعاًa spring meadow

It will water no spring meadow before your dwelling,
Nor climb any height before the sky above you.

With sweet water, but strike your enemies with thunderbolts in your defense.

And if you see a lion lurking for prey,
Watching fate's unguarded moments, his head lowered,

It is only to reserve its savor in full
For you, when he races toward it and strikes true.

And if he rises one day to lofty honors, it is because
He has climbed to shield your footfall from slippery ground.

And if he strives in some great undertaking, he only
Strives to clear the way for you along that road.

It was nocked only out of love for you.

For you alone to gather while it bears fruit,
And to wear its dew as long as it bears leaves.

So sleep at ease, and ask me for rain: you will draw
A keen sword that cuts through the joint whenever it meets bone.

A mighty host that flashes when the night grows dark,

And an army whose two wings are bridled with death,
Both beating, never finding a landing-place on earth.

From early morning until you see the sun as a dab of yellow dye,
As though a brightly patterned robe lay over the lowlands.

Their last moisture by traversing west and east;

And every bare-ribbed she-camel seemed as though
They had set over her a butcher stripping flesh from bones.

If time gives me feathers, I shall be your falcon,
Delighting you when confined, and pleasing you when loosed.

By a willing bargain, whether I grow rich or poor.

You will take the half that is all prosperity,
And I shall take the half that is all hardship.

You will take what brings sleep and what is sweet,
And I shall take what is bitter and keeps one awake.

Another man, when he flies, leaves his companions
Grounded below the heights, and soars aloft.

If you advance me honor before its time,
I shall repay you with a lovely face of affection.

Perhaps the nights will bring a wish to fulfillment,
And knock for me upon a closed door of fortune.

Wait; do not think my resolve slow, for you will not see
Anything clinging where you find no hold to cling to.

Among the people, who heats a branding iron, then presses it home.

If my age should hold me back one day,
My glory will surely lift me to those heights.

By God, I will not belie your trust: it
Would be a shame if your trust came back disappointed.

For he who believes his expectations true
Is the peer of him who strengthens and fulfills them.
