قَلِقَgrew anxious العَدوُّthe enemy وَقَدand indeed حَظيتُI was favored بِرُتبَةٍwith a rank
قَلِقَ العَدوُّ وَقَد حَظيتُ بِرُتبَةٍ
تَعلوrises عَنِabove النُظَراءِpeers وَالأَمثالِand equals
تَعلو عَنِ النُظَراءِ وَالأَمثالِ
Disquiet the foe, now that you have attained a station
The enemy grew anxious when I attained a rank
that towers above all peers and equals.
That rises above peers and equals.
لَوif كُنتُI were أَقنَعُI am content بِالنَقابَةِwith the office of naqib وَحدَهاit alone
لَو كُنتُ أَقنَعُ بِالنَقابَةِ وَحدَها
لَغَضَضتُI would have lowered حينَwhen بَلَغتُهاI attained it آماليmy ambitions
لَغَضَضتُ حينَ بَلَغتُها آمالي
Had I been content with the Alid headship alone,
Had I been content with the office of naqib alone,
I would have lowered my ambitions once I reached it.
I would have lowered my ambitions when I attained it.
لَكِنَّbut ليI have نَفسٌa soul تَتوقُyearns إِلىfor الَّتيthe one that
لَكِنَّ لي نَفسٌ تَتوقُ إِلى الَّتي
ماno بَعدَbeyond أَعلاهاits summit مَقامٌstation عالِlofty
ما بَعدَ أَعلاها مَقامٌ عالِ
But I have a soul that yearns for that station
But I have a soul that yearns for that rank
beyond whose summit no lofty station lies.
Beyond whose summit no lofty station lies.
قالواthey said حَجَرتَyou imposed restrictions عَلىon نَداكَyour bounty وَطالَماand so often
قالوا حَجَرتَ عَلى نَداكَ وَطالَما
أَرغَمتَyou rubbed in the dust فيهِthrough it مَعاطِسَnoses العُذّالِthe reproachers
أَرغَمتَ فيهِ مَعاطِسَ العُذّالِ
They said, “You have curbed your bounty,” though many a time
They said, “You have curbed your bounty, though so often
through it you ground the faultfinders’ noses in the dust.
Through it you rubbed the reproachers’ noses in the dust.”
هَيهاتَfar from it! قَلَّhave grown few الحامِدونَthose who praise وَصارَand has become مَنthe one whom
هَيهاتَ قَلَّ الحامِدونَ وَصارَ مَن
أَحَبوهُI favor him يَحسُدُنيenvies me عَلىfor أَمواليmy wealth
أَحَبوهُ يَحسُدُني عَلى أَموالي
Far from it! The grateful have grown few, and the one
Far from it! Those who praise have grown few, and now the one
I loved has come to envy me my wealth.
I favor envies me for my wealth.
مَنwho ليfor me بِمَنwith someone who تَزكوflourish الصَنائِعُacts of kindness عِندَهُwith him
مَن لي بِمَن تَزكو الصَنائِعُ عِندَهُ
حَتّىso that أُشاطِرَهُI share equally with him كَرائِمَthe choicest portions of ماليmy wealth
حَتّى أُشاطِرَهُ كَرائِمَ مالي
Where can I find one in whose hands benefactions flourish,
Who will find me someone with whom kindness bears fruit,
so I may share with him the choicest of my wealth?
So I may share with him the choicest of my wealth?
