جَنىhe did wrong وَتَجَنّىand falsely accused وَالفُؤادُand the heart يُطيعُهobeys him
فَيَأمَنُso he feels safe أَنthat يُجنىwrong be done عَليهِto him كَماas يَجنيhe does wrong
He has wronged me and falsely accused me, yet my heart obeys him;
So he feels safe from being wronged as he does wrong.
إِلىuntil كَمhow long تُسيءُyou make unfavorable لظَنَّthe opinion بيof me مُتَجَرَّماًinventing accusations
وَأَنسُبُand I attribute سوءَill الظَنِّsuspicion مِنكَfrom you إِلىto الضَنِّjealous possessiveness
How long will you think ill of me, inventing accusations,
While I ascribe your mistrust to jealous possessiveness?
وَوَاللَهِand by God لاnot أَحبَبتُI have loved غَيرَكَother than you واحِداًa single person
أَلِيَّةَan oath بَرٍّof a truthful man لاnot تُخافُis feared فَنَستَثنيso we make an exception
And by God, I have loved no one but you—
A truthful man's oath, with no fear to make us qualify it.
فَإِنfor if لَمnot تَكُنyou are عِنديto me كَسَمعيlike my hearing وَناظِريand my sight
فَلاthen may ... not نَظَرَتsee عَينيmy eye وَلاand may ... not سَمِعَتhear أُذنيmy ear
For if you are not to me like my hearing and my sight,
Then may my eye never see, nor my ear ever hear.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you أَحلىsweeter فيin جُفونيmy eyelids مِنَthan الكَرىslumber
وَأَعذَبُand more delicious طَعماًin taste فيin فُؤاديmy heart مِنَthan الأَمنِsafety
And you are indeed sweeter to my eyelids than slumber,
And more delicious to my heart than safety.
