Indeed, the beloved's phantom came visiting by night,

while the mounts were between al-Qinān and Shiʿb.

Upon their saddles were men wasted by longing,

stricken with passion, unlike the rest of the caravan.

Whenever the mounts groaned from exhaustion,

they groaned from burning heartache and anguish.

He visited me, granting union without a promise,

and turned away, forsaking me though I had done no wrong.

My heart had been my eye's guide to him,

so my eye owes my heart a debt of gratitude.

I spent the night dallying with one tender and soft-necked,

and a mouth with cool, sweet moisture.

He quenched my longing—and who before me today has seen

a remedy for burning thirst without drinking?

Freely granting me, despite our separation, a favor

he used to withhold in days of closeness.

    فَإِذا ذَلِكَ الغُرورُ لِقَلبي

    I thought my eye was the one deceived;

but behold, it was my heart that was deceived.
