I say, as the companions have passed through Dhu al-Naqa,

with Murbakh and Zarud ahead of the mounts:

From the sanctuary, do you seek Iraq within my heart?

May you rejoice in a goal so far beyond your reach!

And surely, to think of something, when between you and it

lie the dune-sands of ʿAlij, is hard indeed.

Do you think love’s gatherings in Baghdad today

have, since we left, someone to begin them and someone to renew them?

Some describe longing; others lament a heart

    struck by missiles—eyes and cheeks.

He kept looking back until nothing showed from your lands—

neither smoke nor any glow from their fires.

And surely the heart’s turning back, after his eyes’ glance,

toward you, throughout the nights, grows ever stronger.

And when separation drew near, passion said to me:

‘Gently!’ And the heart said, ‘Where are you bound?’

Do you hope to forget amid distance and separation,

when even near the place of meeting you are love-stricken?

And had those setting out asked me, ‘What do you desire?’

the morning we crossed the sand, I would have said, ‘To return.’

Can I endure, with the sandy waste between me and you,

and Khabt’s hills? I must be hardy indeed!
