Unless I heed lofty ambitions and defy reproachers,

Their silent ones will be turned into speakers against me.

And I starve white camels and sate a sharp sword,

And give lances another draught, while leaving a neighing steed thirsty.

And on many a companion’s baseness I have choked,

So I spat him out at once, before swallowing him.

I turned the lance’s iron butt toward him in his distress,

As though I had driven a spear-point into him.

    فَاِكتَنَّ في جَنبَيهِ سُمّاً قاتِلا

    And, reproaching him, I gave him the most thirst-quenching verse;

It lay hidden within his sides, a deadly poison.

And I clothed his heart in the dust of reproach,

Before punishment; it turned to boulders within him.

And I shook the branches of fear before him,

So he passed through, taking them for sword-edges and slender lances.
