ياO قَلبُheart لَيتَكَwould that you حينَwhen لَمdid not تَدَعِyou forsake الهَوىlove
عَلَّقتَyou had become attached to مَنone who يَهواكَloves you مِثلَlike هَواكاyour love
O heart, would that, since you would not forsake love,
you had loved one whose love for you matched your own.
لَوif كانَwere حَرُّthe heat of الوَجدِyearning يُعقِبُbrings about بَعدَهُafter it
بَردَthe coolness of الوِصالِunion غَفَرتَyou would forgive ذاكَthat لِذاكاfor that
If the heat of yearning brought in its wake
the coolness of union, you would forgive the former for the latter.
لاno بَلrather شُجيتَyou were grieved بِمَنby one who يَبيتُspends the night مُسَلَّماًuntroubled
خاليempty الضُلوعِthe ribs لاnot يَحُسُّhe feels شَجاكاyour sorrow
No, rather you grieve for one who spends the night untroubled,
his breast empty of love, not feeling your sorrow.
إِنif يُصبِحواthey wake صاحينَsober مِنfrom خَمرِthe wine of الهَوىlove
فَلَقَدthen surely سَقَوكَthey made you drink مِنَof الغَرامِpassion دِراكاin rapid succession
If they wake sober from the wine of love,
they have surely made you drink passion, draught after draught.
ياoh لَيتَwould that شُغلَكَyour preoccupation بِالأَسىwith grief أَعداهُمُhad infected them
أَوor لاnot فَلَيتَthen would that فَراغَهُمtheir freedom from care أَعداكاhad infected you
Oh, would that your absorption in grief had infected them,
or else, would that their freedom from care had infected you!
أَهَوىًis it love? وَذُلّاًand abasement فيin الهَوىlove وَطَماعَةًand craving
أَبَداًforever تَعالىexalted is اللَهُGod ماhow أَشقاكاwretched you are
Love, abasement in love, and craving
forever? Exalted be God—how wretched you are!
ياO قَلبُheart كَيفَhow عَلِقتَyou became caught فيin أَشراكِهِمtheir snares
وَلَقَدand indeed عَهِدتُكَI have known you تُفلِتُyou escape الأَشراكاthe snares
O heart, how were you caught in their snares,
when I have known you to escape snares?
أَكثَبتَyou drew near حَتّىuntil أَقصَدَتكَstruck you down سِهامُهُمtheir arrows
قَدalready كُنتُI had been عَنagainst أَمثالِهاtheir like أَنهاكاwarning you
You drew close until their arrows struck you down;
I had warned you against their like.
إِنif ذُبتَyou melt away مِنfrom كَمَدٍgrief فَقَدthen indeed جَرَّhas brought الهَوىlove
هَذاthis السَقامَsickness عَلَيَّupon me مِنon جَرّاكاyour account
If you melt away with grief, love has indeed brought
this sickness upon me because of you.
لاdo not تَشكُوَنَّever complain إِلَيَّto me وَجداًyearning بَعدَهاafter this
هَذاthis الَّذيwhat جَرَّتhave brought عَلَيَّupon me يَداكاyour two hands
Never complain to me of yearning after this:
this is what your hands have brought upon me.
I shall surely punish you بِالغَليلِwith burning thirst فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
لَولاكَbut for you لَمdid not أَذُقِI taste الهَوىlove لَولاكاbut for you
I shall surely punish you with burning thirst, for I,
but for you, would never have tasted love—but for you!
ياO عاذِلَreproacher of المُشتاقِthe yearning lover دَعهُleave him فَإِنَّهُfor indeed he
يَطويhe enfolds عَلىaround الزَفَراتِthe sighs غَيرَother than حَشاكاyour breast
O reproacher of the yearning lover, leave him, for he
harbors sighs within a breast that is not yours.
لَوif كانَwere قَلبُكَyour heart قَلبَهُhis heart ماnot لُمتَهُyou would blame him
حاشاكَmay you be spared مِمّاfrom what عِندَهُis within him حاشاكاmay you be spared
If your heart were his, you would not reproach him;
may you be spared what he endures—may you be spared!
