رَأَيتُI saw شَبابَyouth المَرءِof a man لَيلاًa night يَجِنُّهُthat enfolds him
يُغَطّيcovers عَلىover باديthe visible part of العُيوبِthe faults وَيَستُرُand conceals
I saw a man's youth as a night that enfolds him,
Covering over visible faults and concealing them.
وَشَيبُand the gray hair الفَتىof a young man صُبحٌa dawn يَبينُbecomes apparent عَوارُهُhis flaws
وَيُرمَقُand he is watched فيهِin it بِالعُيونِby eyes فَيُنظَرُand so he is looked upon
And a young man's gray hair is dawn, when his flaws appear,
And in it he is watched by eyes and looked upon.
فَإِنَّfor indeed ضَلاليmy going astray فيin النَهارِdaylight لَهِجنَةٌsurely a disgrace
وَإِنَّand indeed ضَلاليmy going astray فيin دُجىthe darkness of اللَيلِthe night أَعذَرُmore excusable
For my going astray by day is surely a disgrace,
And indeed, my going astray in the darkness of night is more excusable.
