You are departing, while the nights remain encamped.

And long survival does you harm.

No brave man lives forever to embrace the gleaming

blades, nor any who hopes, nor any in whom hopes rest.

Humankind's end in time is extinction,

and likewise the branches' end is withering.

He is like clouds gathered by a south wind

on an overcast day, and torn apart by an east wind.

Such is time's habit: every day

a dear friend draws far away, and deserted dwellings weep.

So the nights side with separation against you,

as length lends strength to slender spears.

A young man may receive from time

a joy that leaves another heartsick.

another out of boredom, like a statuesque beauty.

Every weeper will be wept for, however long

life lasts; the bereaved will themselves be mourned.

And hopes are grief and hardship

for one who thought them consolation.

Death cares not where it climbs,

after a ghoul has carried off Fatimah's son.

What a day, when tearful eyes were made to bleed

by a terrifying event and a mighty calamity!

The day of Ashura, when no aid came

from companions, nor protection from the tribe.

by men; those who keep it are few.

They did not obey the Prophet concerning you, while

old blood-feuds turned their spears against you.

And they blamed fate for their war

against you—if only their excuse were acceptable!

They sought pardon after rallying for

it—only now, you who seek pardon?

Surely an aim for which you braved the sword

is a deadly pasture for whoever gained it.

O keen blade whose edges shattered heads,

though a polished blade has blunted you.

O generous one, who bloodied the charger with spear-wounds,

and turned away, his breast drenched.

The horses' anklets were of their enemies' blood,

on a day when thrusts showed and white stockings vanished.

On a day when fleet steeds' forelegs gave way in the dust,

and weariness overflowed while neighing ebbed.

Do you think I would shelter my face,

while horses range across his face?

Do you think I could relish water, while still

the burning thirst is unslaked by the Imam's lifeblood?

Spears kissed him, and deaths vied in archery

against him, and blades embraced him.

And captive women are driven on fine-bred camels,

their hems reaching up to their necklines.

With hearts that make the eye of sorrow bleed,

and tears drawn forth by ceaseless weeping.

The veil has been stripped from every face

whose modesty itself supplies a veil.

    betrayed every veiled face.

and called to one another, their calling all wailing.

The harsh camel-driver never relents, nor does

one rider cease to echo the other's lament.

    وَقَتيلَ الأَعداءِ نَومي قَتيلُ

    O stranger far from home, my patience too is a stranger;

and O one slain by foes, my sleep too is slain.

Within me a longing surges toward you, and yearning,

and consuming love, and a sigh, and wailing.

Would that I lay beside you in your grave, or that

its earth were bedewed with my tears.

May al-Tufuf never lack, on any day,

a downpour from the night-visiting storms.

Gentle rain, and a north wind,

and a fresh breeze, and sheltering shade.

O sons of Ahmad, how long must my spearhead

be held back from thrusting, kept waiting?

And my steeds are tethered, and my riding camels,

while the outsider recoils in fear from my station.

How long, how long will tyrants rise, and how long

will an inferior rule over every man of merit?

Burning anguish has laid waste my heart; but

it is no wonder if the sick man seeks a cure.

Would that I might live to cut my way through men,

with a keen sword drawn in my hand.

And trail the lances to avenge the day of

al-Tuff, one troop drawing another in its wake.

    بِ وَشَيبي لَولا الرَدى لا يَحولُ

    Love for you has dyed my heart as grayness dyes hair;

and, but for death, my grayness will never fade.

I am your devoted servant, though I am one of you:

my father is Haydar, and my mother al-Batul.

And when men attain the utmost height of glory,

one who says 'My grandfather is the Messenger' outstrips them.

    وَالأَنامُ الَّذي أَراهُ فُضولُ

    People rejoice in me, for I am excellence;

and mankind, as I see it, is mere surplus.

So they are either reciters of what I rhyme,

in delight, or listeners to what I say.

Would that I knew who blames me for words

    that thoughts and minds approve.

Should I forsake a thing for which all

people excuse me, because a faultfinder censures me?

    وَمَعالي الأُمورِ لِلذِمرِ سولُ

    That is my desire, if God favors my fortune;

and lofty pursuits are the valiant man's desire.
