He consults, though he knows affairs best,
and his judgment outstrips the counselor's words.
وَيُفرِغُand he pours out صائِباتِunerring conclusions الرَأيَof judgment فيهاinto them
كَإِفراغِlike emptying النِبالِarrows مِنَfrom الجَفيرِthe quiver
He pours his unerring judgments into them,
like emptying arrows from a quiver.

He hurled fire into the mouth of darkness
and disciplined the biting dog's nature,

Its star nods off, leaving every night traveler
wakeful between riding-camel and saddle.
مَتىwhen أَلقاكَshall I meet you قائِدَهاleading them عِراباًpurebred Arab steeds
مُثَلَّمَةَworn ragged الأَشاعِرِthe hoof-coronets وَالنُسورِand hoof-frogs
When shall I meet you leading them—purebred steeds,
their hoof-coronets and frogs worn ragged,

swaying like adorned maidens,
their girth-knots standing in for waists?

وَأَرفُلُand strut مِنthrough عَجاجِكَyour battle-dust فيin عَبيرِperfume
Then I would swim in blood you shed, as in saffron perfume,
and sweep proudly through your dust as through perfume.

When the nights gallop across your courtyard,
may they forever linger among the months.

And though the hands of hopes reach far through them,
may the hand of a brief promise never lengthen.

May your spears forever remain unleashed,
as you send them time and again toward captive Death.
