عَصَيناwe defied فيكَfor your sake أَحداثَthe vicissitudes of اللَياليthe nights
وَطاوَعناand we obeyed المَكارِمَnoble deeds وَالمَعاليand lofty pursuits
We defied, for your sake, the vicissitudes of the nights,
and obeyed noble deeds and lofty pursuits.
وَفيكَand for your sake رَجَمتُI pelted أَحشاءَthe entrails of الأَعاديthe enemies
بِأَطرافِwith the points of الذَوابِلِslender lances وَالنِصالِand blades
And for your sake I pelted the enemies' entrails
with the points of slender lances and blades.
وَعُذتُand I sought refuge بِجانِبَيكَat your two sides مِنَfrom الرَزاياcalamities
مَعاذيmy seeking refuge فيin الهَواجِرِthe midday heats بِالظِلالِin the shade
And I sought refuge at your sides from calamities,
as I seek shelter in shade at scorching noon.
دَعَوتُكَI called on you يَومَthe day دافَعَwarded off عَنكَfrom you نَحريmy throat
جِناياتِthe ravages of الصَوارِمِkeen swords وَالعَواليand tall lances
I called on you the day my throat shielded you
from the assaults of keen swords and tall lances.
فَماso not خَلِبَbelied النَوائِبُmisfortunes مِنكَfrom you بَرقاًa lightning flash
يَدُلُّpoints عَلىto الوَفاءِfaithfulness إِذاwhen بَداit appeared ليto me
So misfortunes did not belie your lightning flash,
which signals faithfulness when it appears to me.
وَماnor is هَولُthe dread of الفُؤادِthe heart مِنَfrom التَصافيsincere friendship
بَعيدٌfar مِنfrom فُؤادٍa heart فيهِin it خاليempty
Nor is the heart's dread of sincere friendship
far from a heart that is empty of it.
وَلَمand did not أَعلَمI know كَعِلمِlike the knowledge of بَنيthe sons of زَمانيmy time
بِأَنَّthat القُربَcloseness داعِيَةُa cause of المَلالِweariness
And I did not know, as the men of my time knew,
that closeness breeds weariness,
وَأَنَّكَand that you حينَwhen تَطمَعُyou hope فيfor نِضاليcontending with me
وَتَعلَمُand you know أَنَّthat ليmine is سَبقَfirst place in النِضالِthe contest
and that, when you hope to contend with me,
though you know I hold first place in the contest,
كَماشٍlike one walking فيinto الهِياجِbattle بِلاwithout حُسامٍa keen sword
وَساعٍand one hurrying فيthrough الظَلامِdarkness بِلاwithout ذُبالِwicks
you are like one walking into battle without a sword,
and one hurrying through darkness without a wick.
وَإِنّيand indeed I فيin زَمانيmy time مِنamong رِجالٍmen
مِزاجُthe admixture of وِدادِهِمtheir affection ماءُthe water of التَقاليmutual hatred
And in my time I am among men
whose love is mixed with the water of mutual hatred.
شِمالُthe left hand of المالِwealth تَعلوrises عَنabove يَمينيmy right hand
وَيُمنىand the right hand of المَجدِglory تَقصُرُfalls short عَنof شِماليmy left hand
Wealth's left hand rises above my right,
and glory's right hand falls short of my left.
أَقولُI say لَهِمَّتيto my resolve لَمّاwhen أَبَتit denied ليme
مُعاتَبَةَreproaching المَلولِthe fickle one عَلىover الوِصالِunion
I say to my proud resolve, when it forbids me
to reproach the fickle one over our bond:
أُعاتِبُهُI reproach him لَعَلَّperhaps العَتبَreproach يَشفيheals
وَإِنand even if كانَit is الزَعيمَthe guarantor بِكَسفِof darkening باليmy spirits
I will reproach him; perhaps reproach will heal,
even if it guarantees my dejection.
وَلَوand if لَمnot يَبلُغِhe reaches العُتبىreconciliation بِقَولٍthrough words
لَعاتَبناهُwe would reproach him بِالبيضِwith white swords الصِقالِpolished
And if he would not make amends through words,
we would reproach him with bright, polished swords.
رَأىsaw العُذّالُthe censurers بَذلَthe giving of المالِwealth طَبعيmy nature
وَأَسبابَand the roots of الشَجاعَةِcourage مِنamong خِلاليmy traits
The censurers saw that giving wealth was my nature,
and the roots of courage were among my traits.
فَلَمso not أُعذَلI was blamed عَلىfor خَوضِplunging into المَناياdeadly fates
وَلَمand not أُعتَبI was reproached عَلىfor بَذلِbestowing النَوالِgifts
So I was not blamed for plunging into death,
nor reproached for lavishing gifts.
أَبَتrefused هِمَميmy aspirations تَسيغُto swallow الماءَwater صَفواًpure
إِذاif ماever الذُلُّhumiliation حامَhovered عَلىover الزُلالِclear water
My aspirations refuse to swallow water, however pure,
if ever humiliation hovers over the clear draught.
أُذَمُّI am blamed عَلىfor العُلىlofty honor ظُلماًunjustly لِأَنّيbecause I
أَعُلُّI slake بِمائِهاwith its water ظَمَأَthe thirst of السُؤالِentreaty
I am unjustly blamed for greatness, because I
slake the thirst of entreaty with its water.
وَماand have not زِلنَceased العَواطِلُthe unadorned كُلَّevery يَومٍday
مِنَof العَلياءِglory يَذمُمنَthey revile الحَواليthe adorned
And ever, day after day, those lacking the adornment
of glory revile those adorned with it.
وَلَمّاand when ماطَلَتdelayed بِالحَربِin giving battle سَعدٌSa'd
سَنَنّاwe whetted المَوتَdeath فيهاwithin it بِالمِطالِthrough delay
And when Sa'd put off battle,
we whetted death among them through delay.
أَثَرناwe stirred up فيamong قَبائِلِهاits tribes عَجاجاًa dust cloud
تَرَكناwe left مِنهُof it أَثراًa trace فيon الهِلالِthe crescent moon
We raised a dust cloud among its tribes,
and left a trace of it upon the crescent moon.
فَمَنso who يُهديwill convey لِآلِto the house of تَميمَTamim عَتبيmy reproach
مُقيماًabiding فيon ذُرىthe tips of الأَسَلِspears الطِوالِlong
Who, then, will carry my reproach to the house of Tamim,
lodged on the tips of long spears?
مَنَحتُكُمُI granted you الوِدادَaffection فَلَمbut not تَوُدّواyou showed affection
فَأَلقَيتُso I cast المَلامَthe blame عَلىupon فِعاليmy deeds
I gave you affection, but you gave none in return,
so I laid the blame upon my own deeds.
وَلَستُand I am not بِباسِطٍone stretching out كَفّيmy palm لِأَنّيbecause I
أَرىI see الأَفلاكَthe heavenly spheres تَقصُرُfall short عَنof مَناليmy reach
I do not stretch out my hand, for I
see the heavenly spheres fall short of my reach.
