مُتَخَيِّراًchoosing carefully وَالجارُand the neighbor قَبلَbefore الدارِthe house
I tested the house of al-Ghawth, then left them,
choosing with care—for the neighbor comes before the house.
السابِقينَthose who came first إِلىto مُناخِthe halting place of مَطِيَّتيmy mount
لَمّاwhen تَدافَعَتِshifted onto one another العَريبُthe Arabs جِواريmy protection
Those first to reach the halting place of my mount,
when the Arabs each left my protection to the others;
وَالضارِبينَand those who pitched عَلَيَّover me بَيتَa tent of زِمامَةٍprotection
خَسَأَrepelled العَدُوَّthe enemy فَماso not يُطيقُhe can ضِراريharming me
and those who pitched over me a tent of protection
that repelled the enemy, leaving him powerless to harm me.
أَعظَمتُمُyou honored حَسَبيmy ancestral honor وَلَمّاand have not تَحفِلواyou pay heed
ماwhat رَثَّgrew threadbare مِنof سَلَبيmy garments وَلاnor أَطماريmy rags
You honored my ancestry and paid no heed
to my threadbare garments or my rags.
وَعَرَفتُمُand you recognized مِنّيin me مَخيلَةَa sign of سُؤدُدٍnobility

And you discerned in me a sign of nobility
hidden behind the garments of poverty.
كَيفَhow اِعتِرافيmy submission لِلزَمانِto time وَرَيبِهِand its misfortunes
فِعلَin the manner of الذَليلِthe abased وَأَنتُمُwhile you are أَنصاريmy champions
How could I submit to time and its misfortunes
like a man brought low, when you are my champions?
أَجمَمتُمُyou gave rest to فيat الصُبحِdawn راعيthe keeper of هَجمَتيmy camel herd
وَكَفَيتُمُand you relieved بِاللَيلِat night مَوقِدَthe kindler of ناريmy fire
You gave the keeper of my camel herd rest at dawn,
and at night relieved the kindler of my fire.
