    Raise your gaze—do you see

any but the bereaved or the consoled?

    We refuse consolation; then

time joins us to those who have found solace.

In the morning I follow the departed,

    deep sighs shaking me violently,

    seeing no trace, nor

hearing the faintest sound from them.

I weep for blades; my hand was bereft

of the surest of them when wielded.

Once I was of sturdy timber; no

dent could time inflict upon me,

until it bore you away, while

    stern fate drove you relentlessly.

    I could not prevent it—O

God, how resolve has turned to helplessness!

Have they left anything but a breast

in anguish, and a heart in turmoil?

I pass the evening as though spears

were pounding and piercing my ribs.

    O you, my second self—nay,

O third, as dear as my two eyes!

A limb where death has nested—

how noble, and how dearly prized!

    Death prevailed over you; indeed,

a foe, if he prevails, takes the spoils.
