And when it became clear to me that what I had hoped for

From that affair had turned away, after I said it had drawn near,

I hesitated awhile between blame and excuse,

Like one at a watering place, pelted before he can turn elsewhere.

Then, when I saw forbearance take sudden flight,

And saw no choice but to blame and reproach,

I turned and laid the blame for it on stumbling fortune—

So may it never stand among those who stumble, nor rise high!

I heap curses on it, drawing in its rein,

As you return a blunt, notched sword to its sheath.

And I spared a man my blame, having found him neither

Blameworthy nor a door barred against generosity.

My fortune, then, deserves blame more than the rain—

And who would blame a beaming raincloud?
