رُدّواgive back تُراثَthe inheritance of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad رُدّواgive back
لَيسَis not القَضيبُthe rod لَكُمyours وَلاnor البُردُthe mantle
Give back Muhammad’s inheritance—give it back!
Return Muhammad's heritage, return
Neither the rod nor the mantle is yours.
The scepter is not yours, nor the axe
هَلhas ...? عَرَّقَتbestowed lineage فيكُمamong you كَفاطِمَةٍlike Fatimah

أَمor هَلdo ...? لَكُمfor you كَمُحَمَّدٍlike Muhammad جَدُّa grandfather
Has one like Fatimah given you your lineage?
Did Fatima's hand blister for you
Or have you a grandfather like Muhammad?
Or do you have a grandfather like Muhammad
جُلُّthe greater part of اِفتِخارِهِمُtheir boasting بِأَنَّهُمُin that they are
عِندَduring الخِصامِdispute مَصاقِعُeloquent orators لُدُّunyielding disputants
Their greatest boast is that they are
Their pride is entirely in that they
in disputes, eloquent, unyielding disputants.
Are loud-mouthed brawlers
إِنَّindeed الخَلائِفَthe caliphs وَالأُلىand those whom فَخَرواthey boasted
بِهِمُof them عَلَيناagainst us قَبلُbefore أَوor بَعدُafter
Indeed, the caliphs and those they boasted
The caliphs and allies bowed down
of against us, before or after,
Before us, before or after

gained honor through us, and were created for our grandfather;
They were ennobled by us and our grandfather they were created
and they are our protégés, when reckoned.
And they are our artifacts if counted
