Do you see the tribe's dwellings at

the two valley bends, their tents still standing?

Or have they been scattered by the succession of

days, or by migrations after rainclouds?

What harm would it do the riders if

they greeted your ruins with peace,

or conveyed word from a love-stricken man

who wrapped his ribs around his passion?

An affliction! Through her I sustained love,

and severed the bonds of reproach.

And I tasted, in the intoxication of youth,

a madness wilder than the drunkenness of wine.

In the days when I looked into the folds

of my cloak with a falcon's gaze,

and went forth leading young men

with black braids and flowing locks.

May rain bless the days in which

I bore the name "young man"!

I said to the sleeping riders

    upon stony ground and hillocks:

    Rise! For there may awaken

good fortunes for a sleeping people.

Halter the mounts and lay saddlecloths

    over their bleeding saddle sores.

    And let their eyes, through

swift trotting, grow blind with foam,

until you make them kneel within the sanctuary,

hard to climb to and hard to reach,

of the King of Kings, with whom one moves

    between pardon and retribution.

    once he is before me.

Like a lion, he hunts men

and does not raid the grazing herds.

He makes the well-watered thirst when he strikes,

and when he gives, he quenches the thirsty.

    حِ السَوطِ مَكدودِ اللِجامِ

    each with flowing locks, sparing

    فِقُ في الجَماهيرِ العِظامِ

    and with emblazoned banners fluttering

    amid the mighty multitudes;

    مِ وَنازِعِ النِعَمِ الجِسامِ

    and bestower of immense blessings,

    and taker-away of immense blessings.

    complain of their long repose.

    They cast their eyes toward

the land of Yemen and al-Sham.

    each with a fluttering shirt,

    proud-nosed and lean of bone,

    resolute, as though his forearm

were made of a keen, cleaving sword's hilt.

They go forth in the morning through the wide wastes,

wounding one another in the press.

They take shade beneath a dust-cloud

like the breasts of heaped-up clouds,

until you lead away, among your goals,

each one whose reins were out of reach.

Do not be deceived by your enemy's

shot, fired by one who is no archer.

and to us, a cause of weaning.

the archery target squarely with arrows?

Far be it that wolves should tread

    the valiant lion's lairs!

is, unlike his, well-watered and growing.

as one dim-sighted strays in darkness.

He sings to drive it on in folly, though

your right hand has seized the halter.

    O dispeller of besetting distress

    and warder-off of incurable disease:

May you be brought to the utmost of your wishes,

and inherit the lifetimes of humankind!

and endure in defiance of death.

    turned away from this station,

enjoying life to the full, while

with its promise of reaching another year.

    If anything could last forever,

I would give your reign glad tidings of eternity.
