The likeness of your eyes is in the gazelle that crossed my path;
The example of your eyes in the gazelle that set out
he turned away without healing the heart he wounded.
And that did not soften the heart it wounded

I went on clutching the folds of my innards in grief,
So I was happy to withdraw during estrangement as a shield
while he went on lengthening his strides in delight.
While it was happy to reveal itself during intimacy and joy

I waived vengeance for a heart whose blood he spilled with impunity,
I forgave the blood of a heart whose tear it shed wastefully
out of mercy for him; yet he neither spared nor pardoned.
Remaining upon it, so it neither remained nor forgave

The arrow of his eye reserved every pasture for him,
It protected every pasture from the arrow of its eyelash
and the watering-place, for evening and morning drinking.
And the watering places, spent and brightlyadorned

Are you drawing up the great bucket of tears in grief
You are a wiper of the tears of imprisonment from an orb
over the women in howdahs, when they passed Muttalah?
Upon the does when they passed by me alert

I followed them with a look whose edges bled
as they trotted over al-Aqiq's sands at forenoon.
And they sifted into the sands of carnelian in the morning

Among them the fawn of my glance pastures its herd
is the kernels of hearts, whenever he forages or roams.
The love of hearts when it intended or set out

I have from tears that if their wellspring
your people's mounts on the day at al-Jiz‘, the tears would not run dry.
Were your tribe’s horses on the day of anguish, they would not flow

They left Aswan weaving its tears
following the upland lightning wherever it turns.
Heading with the sublime thunderbolt wherever it went

Frightened by travelers crossing and disturbed
the drivers' cries as they urge the weary she-camels onward.
By the shouting of guides that paralyzes the slender oryx

Reach them a ray or the heart that bled?

If the spilling of my blood through parting means little to them,
If shedding my blood seems trivial to them
then surely tears must mean little too, if they are shed.
Then shedding tears should be trivial if poured

Tell the reproaching women: Gently! Tomorrow gray hair
Tell the flirts “Enough,” for old age tomorrow
will become a hobble for the man whose heart ran wild.
Will buy the reason of him whose heart aspired

Far from it—that, gray-haired, I should need reproach!
Alas! Along with my old age I need no blame
Gray hair reproaches me more than those who blamed and chided me.
For old age is more blameworthy than one who blamed me and shone

since you left, the unsuspecting yearling has come of age.
For after you separation made the deceived heart bleed

I think your head is wearied by its load
many a burden is wished back by the man who cast it off.
And what a heavy load whose bearer was thrown

hoping for bounty from a vessel that scarcely seeps?
From whose vessel seldom pours we hope for dew?

The people busied themselves defending against their own evil
rather than asking them for generosity and gifts.
From bestowing and giving gifts

it is folly to make a wronged man a trusted counselor.

One who asks about the towering mountain why its foundations weakened
when once it outweighed any weight set against it.
And if it leaned how much would tip it over

How often has distress tightened amid a hard plight,
And how often did a calamity become stuck at an impasse
then cleared away by God's decree, and opened wide!
Then by God’s destiny relieve and relax

I see men like the plain's dumb beasts, to whom
I see men whom drinking brought down to the floor
the mangler of opinions and the plain speaker are alike.
Equal whether tearful or happy

Among them, above the summits of necks rises
The one who betrayed disgracefully ascends upon their necks’ summits
the giver of false counsel; the honest counselor's neck is trodden down.
While the neck of the advisor bows

They joined forces to make error fashionable among them,
They pretended by the hypocrisy of misguidance among themselves
until even the eloquent claimed it, hateful though it is.
Until the eloquent claimed it against its repulsiveness
