رُبَّmany a أَخٍbrother ليof mine لَمdid not تَلِدهُbear him أُمّيmy mother
رُبَّ أَخٍ لي لَم تَلِدهُ أُمّي
يَنفيwards off الأَذىharm عَنّيfrom me وَيَجلوand dispels هَمّيmy grief
يَنفي الأَذى عَنّي وَيَجلو هَمّي
Many a brother have I whom my mother did not bear.
He wards harm away from me and dispels my grief,
وَيَصطَليand is scorched دونِيَin my stead بِالمُلِمِّby calamity
وَيَصطَلي دونِيَ بِالمُلِمِّ
إِذاwhen دُعيتُI am summoned اِشتَدَّhe hastens ماضيsteadfast in العَزمِresolve
إِذا دُعيتُ اِشتَدَّ ماضي العَزمِ
And is scorched by calamity in my stead.
When I am summoned, he hastens, steadfast in resolve,
كَأَنَّas though ماparticle completing 'as though' قالَhad spoken مُنادٍa caller بِاِسميby my name
كَأَنَّ ما قالَ مُنادٍ بِاِسمي
As though a caller had spoken my name.
