Some people vie with us in boasting of those who did not beget them—

of Taym, when early merits are counted, or Adi.

And they forget one—had they put him first, they would surely have led forward

the bridle of a garlanded courser among steeds—

Hashim's young champion after the Prophet, and its reach

toward lofty aims or the winning of glory and lordship.

And without Ali, they would not have scaled its heights,

nor encamped at its pasture and watering place.

Through the Prophet and Fatimah, we have gained over them

the heights of noble endeavor, in every station and seat.

Through Ahmad's two grandsons and his legatee, we towered above

the necks of mankind, whether in Tihamah or Najd.

And we count Atiq as ours, the very summit of your pride,

through descent from the daughter of al-Qasim ibn Muhammad.

So one forefather is a prophet, then another is a caliph—

what more is there beyond our two forefathers, Ali and Ahmad?

And after the Prophet, none but him has been the pride

of any hand that struck another on the day of allegiance.
