It is unjust that we should endure the hangover

when cares have robbed us of the wine.

Within us the showers of Time's reversals

drink their fill repeatedly, and repeatedly thirst.

    وَمَن لِيَ أَنّي مَلَكتُ الخِيارا

    You make me choose between my self-respect and wealth;

but who can assure me that the choice is mine?

And had I any longing for bounty,

I would spare Time and seek gifts from the seas.

And what lightened its onslaught was that I

see life as a borrowed, threadbare robe.

I face no ordeal unless it is mighty,

and seize no undertaking except by force.

And whenever the enemy grew overbearing,

I poured spears and blades upon him.

How many a need have I of Time,

through which to wet a slender spear or blade!

Toward it trail the skirts of hope,

and in it Time casts off its bridle.

And many a day you passed through swords,

and waded toward it through streaming blood.

You raised the dust above it as smoke,

and kindled fire from the surging spear-thrusts.

And among its white blades, amid gore, you embraced

anemones, and among its brown spears, pomegranate blossoms.

And many a night, with fear a young man's close-worn garment,

when his hearing clasped hands with whispers.

We opened its sanctuary to our mounts' footpads,

until we plundered the hills and hollows.

And many a land veiled in midday heat,

stripping from itself a veil of mirage,

you stormed its expanse with spears,

building there a beacon out of dew.

You did not flinch at death's branching ways,

nor fear danger there in any undertaking.

And you blunted the edges of calamities

with might that shelters whenever Time oppresses.

Among the things that make reproaching Time lawful

is its banishing the noble and the best.

Hear me, O crown of humankind:

a prayer compels me to speak aloud.

Trust in God, you two, for Time

grants safety and sets fear riding.

    No wonder it lends riches,

for glory is too noble to be lent.

If death makes peace with your two souls,

may Time wage war on wealth alone.

A calamity struck you both, then passed,

and you regained your honor, though not your homes.

And Time that restores our eminence

is all the likelier to restore the covering.

Have you not seen, O you whom calamities flung,

tugging you to right or left,

and you through whose wealth Time drove

the mature steeds of its disasters and the Mahri camels,

what calamity has devoured of our honor,

though we were bitter aloes or herbs to it?

    We built glory's fortress solid,

but it hollowed within it a den for humiliation.

We made a covenant with death's reach,

but it undid the pact and violated our honor.

    Yet we hope that Time

will restore what it borrowed of our eminence,

and that we may master the necks of its calamities,

and fit them with a bit or bridle.

And may its clouds clear away from you both

    cares that overshadow burning hearts.

And may God give you both your enviers themselves,

    surrendered as slaves or captives.

And may the one who hates you both return pale,

shaking the dust from his shoulders.

And he whose riches Time has won at gambling—

his good fortune decrees that it return the winnings.

Enough for you as a stratagem that kills the foe

is that humiliation should seek to flee from you.

Though you both ranged across Time's battlefield,

and on its course it lodged you in a fall,

ignorance strikes none but the forbearing,

and folly unravels nothing but dignity.

Your wealth was scattered among the enemies,

yet you two are one person, beyond dispute.

Nor have I met either of you alone in this world,

asking after his companion, 'Where has he gone?'

I shall wait for Time so long as it holds out to me

a promise, and leaves me some patience for waiting.

May God curse an age so full of enemies

that even darkness is at war with day.

I scrutinized the faces of its sons,

but my gaze found no resting-place among them.

    I saw morning reviling evening

as I do, and loathing its company.

And it grows pale within it, although

it changes its vest each day.

So be as I am amid calamities:

when struck, I refuse to do anything but blaze.

For its generosity with riches has not deceived me,

and has only deepened my aversion to it.
