أَقولُI say وَالأَقداءُand the afflictions تَرتَميناpelt us
وَالدَهرُand Time لاnot يَحفِلُcares مالَقيناwhat we have suffered
I say, while afflictions pelt us,
And Time cares nothing for what we have suffered:
ماwhat بالُstate قَلبيmy heart يَطلُبُseeks الحَنيناa plaintive cry
وَجدُanguish القَرينِthe companion اِفتَقَدَhas lost القَريناthe companion
What ails my heart, that it seeks to lament?
The grief of a companion who has lost his companion.
وَماand what لِدَمعيwith my tears يُقرِبُfills الشُؤوناthe tear ducts
قَدalready كادَalmost أَنto يَطلَعَrise above الجُفوناthe eyelids
And what ails my tears, filling the tear ducts?
They have almost risen above the eyelids
مِنbecause of خَبَرٍnews لاmay not جاءَناcome to us يَقيناconfirmed
بِأَنَّthat عَينَthe eye الكَرَمِof generosity اليَميناthe right one
At news—may it never reach us confirmed—
That generosity's right eye
تَقَذّىis troubled by a mote وَقَدthough it has أَقَرَّتِgladdened العُيوناthe eyes
قُلوبُناour hearts أَسمَعتَناmade us hear الأَنيناgroaning
Is troubled by a mote, though it has gladdened eyes.
Our hearts have made us hear groaning;
وَقُمنَand rise ياO آمالَناour hopes فَاِبكيناthen weep
هَيهاتَfar beyond reach يَلقىone finds مِنfrom زَمانٍtime ليناgentleness
And rise, O our hopes, then weep!
There is no hope of finding gentleness in Time.
لاnever نَهَضَتbrought forth عَنfrom مِثلِهِhis like السِنوناthe years
أَعياproved impossible for العَقيمَthe barren one أَنto تَرىsee البَنيناsons
The years have never brought forth his like;
Barren Time is powerless to behold sons.
ياah مَنwho لَناfor us اليَومَtoday نُلاقيwe face الهوناhumiliation
يَؤُمُّناleads us بَعدَكَafter you أَوor يَأبوناacts as our father
Ah, who is there for us today, as we face humiliation,
To lead us after you, or be a father to us?
أَمor مَنwho عَلىagainst أَيّامِناour days يُعديناaids us
وَيَعكِسُand turns back السَهمَthe arrow إِلىtoward راميناthe one shooting at us
Or who will aid us against our days,
And turn the arrow back toward the one shooting at us?
أَمor مَنwho يُعيدُbrings back النَعَمَthe livestock العِزيناin scattered herds
جَوافِلاًstampeding تَشجُرُare prodded بِالقُنيناwith spears
Or who will bring back the scattered herds of livestock,
Stampeding, prodded with spears,
شَجَرَlike the parting of المَداريcombs القَطَطَtightly curled hair الدَهيناoiled
اللَهَfor God's sake ياO رَيبَvicissitudes الزَمانِof Time فيناin dealing with us
As combs part tightly curled, oiled hair?
For God's sake, O vicissitudes of Time, spare us!
أَبقِshow mercy عَلىto الدُنياthe world وَحابِand favor الديناthe faith
ماwhat لَكَwith you لاnot تُنظِرُناgrant us respite الدُيوناthe debts
Spare the world, and favor the faith.
Why do you give us no respite for our debts?
تَأخُذُyou take مِنّاfrom us كُلَّall ماthat تُعطيناyou give us
لاmay not غِضتَyou drain ذاكَthat الثَغَبَthe pool المَعيناflowing
You take from us everything you give us.
May you not drain that pool of flowing water.
ياoh لَيتَهُwould that he يوقىbe spared وَلاand not وُقيناwe were spared
بَينَbetween يَدَيهِhis two hands نَرِدُwe approach المَنوناdeath
Oh, would that he were spared, and we were not!
Before him, we would meet death.
لاmay not كانَcome to pass ماwhat نَحذَرُwe dread أَنthat يَكوناit might happen
May what we dread never come to pass.
