لَيسَis not الصِباyouthful passion اليَومَtoday مِنof شَأنيmy concern وَلاnor وَطَريmy desire
لَيسَ الصِبا اليَومَ مِن شَأني وَلا وَطَري
Sheathe your glances away from us, gazelle of the thicket.
My cheek's beauty forsakes intoxicating wine
Youthful passion today is neither my concern nor my desire.
Youth's pleasure is not my business today nor my desire
ماتَhas died الغَرامُpassion فَماso not أُصغيI listen إِلىto طَرَبٍrapture

وَلا أُرَبّي دُمُوعَ العَينِ لِلسَهَرِ
Passion is dead; I lend no ear to rapture.
Passion has died, so I do not hearken to musical rhythm
Nor do I nurture my eye's tears for sleepless nights.
Nor make my eyes shed tears through wakefulness

في رَونَقِ الصَفوِ ما يُغني عَنِ الكَدَرِ
Whoever loves honor does not bow to a beautiful woman.
He who loves glory pays no heed to singers
In the splendor of clarity lies enough to dispense with murk.
A handsome appearance brings no joy to a gloomy heart
شُغِلتُI was occupied بِالمَجدِwith glory عَمّاaway from what يُستَلَذُّis enjoyed بِهِin it

وَقائِمُ اللَيلِ لا يَلوي عَلى السَمَرِ
Glory has occupied me, away from all that gives delight.
I have been busy with glory, neglecting what gives pleasure
And one who keeps night vigil does not turn to evening talk.
And the sleepless arise not for conversation
طَوَيتُI wound up حَبلَthe cord of زَمانٍa time كُنتُI used to أَندُبُهُlament it

إِذاwhenever جَذَبتُI drew بِهِwith it باعاًa fathom مِنَof العُمُرِlife
إِذا جَذَبتُ بِهِ باعاً مِنَ العُمُرِ
I have wound up the cord of a time I used to lament,
I have folded the rope of time which I used to mourn
whenever I drew along it a fathom of my life.
When I pulled at it, taking some lifetime with it
لاmay not يُبعِدِcast far away اللَهُGod مَنthose غارَتdescended to the lowlands رَكَائِبُهُمtheir riding camels

وَأَنجَدَ الشَوقُ بَينَ القَلبِ وَالبَصَرِ
May God not cast far away those whose riding camels descended to the lowlands,
May God not distance those whose litters are covered
while longing rose to the uplands between heart and sight.
And yearning has brought heart and sight together

O that halt behind the night, which I remember—
O a halt behind the night I was accustomed to
it was the offspring of patience barren of fulfillment.
That was the result of patience, whose desire was barren

And longing robs me of a heart I jealously guard,
And ecstasy overpowers me, a heart I cuddle
and tears deny my eye the pleasure of looking.
And tears prevent my eyes the pleasure of seeing

وَاللَيلُ يَرمُقُني بِالأَنجُمِ الزُهُرِ
I visited them by night, while the mounts aroused suspicion,
I came upon them when the camels were being saddled
and the night watches me with shining stars.
And the night glanced at me with bright stars

وَالحَيُّ مِنّي إِذا أَغفوا عَلى غَرَرِ
I placate the dog lest it raise its voice,
I pretend to the dog to show its barrenness
and the tribe, when they fall asleep, is in peril from me.
And the living one from me, when they sleep in negligence

And in the tent with which my heart was smitten
And in the tent which my heart worried about
was a wide-eyed beauty, her eyes like gazelles' and wild cattle's.
A glitter from the eyes of the does and cows

I brought her out, and we raced together away
I brought her out and we conversed from a distance
from the tents, effacing our footprints with our wraps.
From the tents, lightly stepping in slippers
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنَيتُI turned back وَلَمand did not أَدنَسbecome sullied سِوىexcept عَبَقٍa lingering scent

Then I turned back, with no stain but a lingering scent
Then I turned away and dirtied nothing but some fragrance
on my sides, from the fragrance of her perfumed mantle.
On my bosom, from the wind blowing its sweet scent

May the rainclouds not neglect the land where they hobble their camels,
The clouds do not neglect land where they dwell
nor withhold from them the sweetness of rain.
Nor did the sweet rain pass over them

The breeze trailed across the flanks of their dwelling
The breeze dragged over their abode
a hem, and clothed it in the softness of the predawn hour.
A train and clothed it in the softness of magic

And my weeping for a companion whose loss struck me
And my weeping is not for a familiar group I was anguished about
is only for every youth like a keen, well-tempered sword.
Except for every blooming hero

إِنَّ المُشَيَّعَ أَولى الناسِ بِالظَفَرِ
Never did they wage war on Time but its side grew yielding;
They did not fight against fate unless its side
indeed, the courageous man is most deserving of victory.
Truly the mourned one is most deserving of victory

'Men, to the rescue!' is a cry that points
O for men a prayer not pointed to
only to a target marked by humiliation and fear.
Except for a purpose, in humiliation and caution

Halt your departure, for my heart is departing;
Return the departure, for the heart is departing
and travel on: my eye's tears are on a journey.
And travel, for the eye's tear is traveling

And the day the valleys of Babylon roared
with horses robed in white markings and forehead blazes,
With horses in the finery ofsegmentation and fraud

we rose to unveil behind the face-veils every youth,
We stood, every hero shining behind the scarf
as though his features were on the face of the moon.
As if his adornment were in a page of the moon

I do indeed bestow on a people I do not visit
I refuse a folk I do not visit
the spears' spewing of blood from jugular veins and mouths:
The herd bleated from the blood of the udders and lips

رَمى فَشَتَّتَ شَملَ الماءِ بِالحَجَرِ
thrusts like a tester who came upon pools at dawn,
A stab just as the betrayal examined at daybreak
threw a stone, and scattered the gathered water.
He threw and scattered the water's union with a rock

And an ignorant one attacked my honor without cause
I held back from him, without faltering or being tongue-tied.
I restrained myself without weakness or limit

Disgrace shielded him from me, should I punish him,
My friends protected him from me if I were to punish him
as the flesh of a camel herd is protected by saddle sores.
Just so are the fleshes of prey protected by the hyena

And many a wilderness, like the edges of gleaming swords, stretching on
And a flashy one, like the claw of an egg
with mirage, stripped of landmarks and cover,
Disgraced by flags and wine

whenever the sun leaned down over it, she was frightened
When the sun hangs over it, it angers her
by the shimmer's infatuation with rivers and pools.
The burning of timber by the rivers and treason

I choked its soil with pale camels, commanding
I choked his dust by force prevailing
at speed the necks of approach to water and return.
Over the survival, the necks of roses and breasts

I traverse lands toward those where I will not be humbled
I roam the countries to what I am not disgraced by
among the lands, and I do not travel on a gamble:
Of countries, and what I conceal of danger

unknown wastes I do not think the wolf knows,
Ignorantly, I do not think the wolf knows them
nor has a tracker walked there following a trace.
Nor has a tracker walked in them by a trace

There the vigilant, daring man forgets his purpose,
The wakeful brave forgets his need in them
and there a man becomes one whose tidings have died.
And a man awakens in them with dead experience

Do not distance my wishes which rebelled
above Time on the forelegs of wry-necked she-camels,
Against fate by the hands of the delicate slim

To you, without you the distances would not have mingled with them
They see the halting-places on night journeys and at early dawn.
You see the dwellings in the darkness and innocence

O son of the Prophet, here are words with nothing hidden,
O son of the Prophet, say unhidden words
and the best speech among us is the speech of one who is concise.
And the best words about us are concise words

I saw your palm as the refuge of every noble deed
I saw your palm the refuge of every glory
when the people's palms counseled one another to be tightfisted.
When the people's palms joined in hardship

Your branch has surely flourished, and its arak tree has swayed
Your branch prospered and its boughs shook
in glory; lofty attainments are the finest of trees.
In glory, truly the heights are the sweetest of trees

Not all a man's offspring flourish where they are planted;
Not all the progeny of a blooming youth prosper
the stem may be bereft of leaves and fruit.
Sometimes the stick is anguished by leaves and fruit

Truly, spears, though their tips are long—
Truly the spears, though their points are long
the enemy's—counsel one another to fall short of you.
From hostility, stop short of you

The nights drag from you a sword of battle
that rouses Death amid bright swords and dusky spears,
That rouses death between the white and brown

The parade of opinion, if his tongues stumbled
he drags the lances, some bent and others bowed.
Drags war between a summoner and encourager

So may you remain safe when the mount throws its rider,
So submit when the ridden throws off its rider
and Time turns lionlike through fates and reversals.
And time overpowers with foreordained destinies and others
