إِذاwhen قَيلَit is said نَجدِيُّof Najd المُباحِthe open range تَغَوَّراdescended to the lowlands
And a cloud piled in tiers, whose breadth no gaze can cross:
when they say its range is Najd, it descends to the lowlands.
تَخالُyou imagine بِهِwithin it رُكنَيthe two shoulders of أَبانَAban وَشابَةٍand Shabah
أَطلاًa flank وَرَجراجاًand a quivering mound مِنَof الرَملِsand أَعفَراtawny
You imagine the two shoulders of Aban and Shabah within it
as a flank, beside a quivering mound of tawny sand.
إِذاwhen مَدَّstretched out بِالأَعناقِwith its necks قَعقَعَrattled رَعدُهُits thunder
كَعودِlike an old camel المَلاof the open waste إِنif عَضَّهُbit it العِبُّthirst جَرجَراrumbled
When it stretches out its necks, its thunder rattles,
like an old desert camel rumbling when thirst bites it.
كَماas اِصطَرَعَتclashed راياتُthe banners of قَيسٍQays وَخَندَفٍand Khindif
عَجالىin haste يَجُدّونَmow down العَديدِthe host المُجَمهَراmassed together
As the banners of Qays and Khindif clash,
their men hasten to mow down the massed host.
إِذاwhen أَجَّblazed بِالإيماضِwith lightning flashes قُلتَyou said اِبنُIbn كُفَّةٍKuffah
يُضَرِّمُkindles بِالغابِin the thicket الأَباءَthe reeds المُسَعَّراset ablaze
When it blazes with lightning, you say, 'Ibn Kuffah
is kindling the blazing reeds in the thicket.'
تَشَوَّلَraised its tail تَشوالَwith the tail-lifting of البُروقِthe tail-raising she-camel بِبُرقَةٍon a stony plain

It lifts its tail as a she-camel does on a stony plain,
and echoes a pampered camel stallion's rumbling at Qarqara.
كَأَنَّas though بِهِwithin it النَوتِيَّthe sailor مِنfrom سَيفِthe shore of جُدَّةٍJeddah

عَلىin عَجَلٍhaste يُزجيdrives along السَفينَthe ships المُوَقَّراheavily laden
As though within it a sailor from Jeddah's shore
were hastily driving heavily laden ships.
لَهُit has نَعَراتٌroars بَينَbetween قَوٍّQaww وَرامَةٍand Ramah
وَلاand not نَعَراتُthe roars of الشَيخِthe old man أَوسِAws بنِson of مَعيَراMaʿyar
It has roars between Qaww and Ramah,
beside which old Aws ibn Maʿyar's roars are nothing.
أَبَسَّتcoaxed gently بِهِto it ريحُthe wind of النُعامىthe south مَنيحَةًa camel lent for milking
كَماjust as جَعجَعَbellowed الوَهمُthe massive camel الثَفالُthe heavy, slow-moving one لِيَعقِراto be hamstrung
The south wind coaxes it like a camel lent for milking,
as a massive, heavy camel bellows when brought down for slaughter.
وَهَوجاءَand a raging wind فيin أَشواطِهاits courses عَجرَفِيَّةٌheadstrong
تَسوقُdrives مِنَfrom الغَورِthe lowlands الغَمامَthe clouds الكَنَهوَراdensely massed
And a raging wind, headstrong in its courses,
drives dense cloudbanks from the lowlands.
تَبَعَّقُgushes بِالأَطباءِthrough the teats مِنfrom كُلِّevery فيقَةٍfresh yield of milk
كَمَخضِlike the churning of الغَريرِيِّthe Ghariri camel المَزادَthe waterskins المُوَكَّراfilled to the brim
It gushes through its teats with every fresh yield of milk,
like a Ghariri camel churning brimming waterskins.
وَأَقلَعَand lifted away إِقلاعَlike the lifting of الظَلامِdarkness وَقَدand having وَزىdrenched
قِلالَthe summits of الرَوابيthe hills وَالرَكِيَّand the wells المُغَوِّراdeeply sunken
And it clears as darkness clears, having drenched
the hilltops and the deeply sunken wells.
قَضىfulfilled its duty بِكَfor you لاnot ضَنّاًout of stinginess عَليكَtoward you بِمَدمَعيwith my tears
وَلَكِنbut رَسيلُthe companion of الدَمعِtears جادَpoured generously وَأَمطَراand rained
It paid its due to you—not that I begrudged you my tears,
but the companion of tears poured freely and rained.
لَقَدindeed ساءَنيgrieved me أَنَّthat البَلابِلَthe torments رَوَّحَتeased
وَأَنَّand that مَطالَthe persistence of الداءِthe illness بَعدَكَafter you أَقصَراabated
It grieved me that the torments eased,
and that the illness's persistence abated after you.
تَضَرَّعتُI humbled myself فيin أَعقابِthe aftermath of وَجدٍgrief عَليكُمُfor you all
وَمَنand whoever فاتَهُmissed الإِعذارُdoing one's utmost بِالأَمرِin the matter عَذَّراmade excuses
I humbled myself in the aftermath of grief for you;
and whoever cannot do a matter full justice makes excuses.
وَأَهجُرُكُمand I forsake you all هَجرَwith the abandonment of الخَلِيِّone free of love وَأَنتُمُand you all
أَعَزُّdearer عَلىto عَينَيَّmy two eyes مِنthan طارِقِthe night visitor of الكَرىsleep
I forsake you as one free of love would, though you
are dearer to my eyes than the nightly coming of sleep.
وَلَمand did not أَزجُرِI rebuke العَينَthe eye الدُموعَtearful لِتَنتَهيso it would stop
وَلَمand did not أَعذُلِI reproach القَلبَthe heart اللَجوجَobstinate لِيَصبِراso it would endure
I did not rebuke my tearful eye to make it stop,
nor reproach my obstinate heart to make it endure.
وَقالواand they said أَرِحsoothe قَرحَthe wound of الفُؤادِthe heart وَإِنَّماyet it is only
أَحَبُّthe dearer فُؤادَيَّof my two hearts اِنطَوىfolded shut دونَهُbefore it البَرىthe earth
They said, 'Soothe the heart's wound,' yet it is
the dearer of my two hearts that earth has shut away.
كَفىsufficed for جانِبَthe side of القَبرِthe grave الَّذيthat أَنتَyou ضِمنَهُare within it
زَفيريmy sighing وَدَمعيand my tears أَنto يُراحَbe fanned by wind وَيُمطَراand be rained upon
Enough for the side of the grave that holds you
are my sighs and tears to bring it breeze and rain.
وَماand not ضَرَّharmed قَلبيmy heart إِذsince غَداbecame مِنكَwith you آهِلاًinhabited
تَأَمُّلُthe contemplation of عَينيmy eye مَنزِلاًa dwelling مِنكَof you مُقفِراempty
My heart, once it had become a home to you, was not hurt
by my eye's gazing at a dwelling empty of you.
ذَكَرتُكَI remembered you وَالأَرضُand the earth العَريضَةُwide بَينَناbetween us
وَشَرٌّand a torment عَلىfor ذيone possessed of الوَجدِlonging أَنto يَتَذَكَّراremember
I remembered you, with the wide earth between us,
and bitter for one who yearns is remembrance.
فَإِنso if لَمhas not يَزَلdeparted قَلبيmy heart إِلَيكَtoward you فَقَدthen indeed هَفاfluttered
وَإِنand if لَمhas not يَزِدincreased دَمعيmy tears عَليكَfor you فَقَدthen indeed جَرىflowed
So if my heart has not gone to you, it has at least fluttered,
and if my tears have not increased for you, they have at least flowed.
