بِفيكَin your mouth أَباO father of الغَيداقِal-Ghaydaq تُربٌdust وَجَندَلُand stones
And they said, "Swallow it; it is only a morsel."
They said, "Listen to her, she is just babbling."
Dust and stones in your mouth, Abu al-Ghaydaq!
In you, O father of Al-Ghaydaq, is dust and rags.
صَدَفتُI turned away بِوَجهيwith my face لاnot بِقَلبِيَwith my heart عَنكُمُfrom you all
وَيَصدِفُand turns away قَلبُthe heart المَرءِof a person وَالوَجهُwhile the face مُقبِلُturned toward
I turned my face away from you, not my heart.
I turned my face away from you, not my heart.
And a person's heart turns away while their face is turned toward you.
While a man's heart turns, his face remains forward.
رَجَعناwe turned back عَلىon الأَعقابِthe heels فيماin what يَسُرُّناdelights us
نُجَرُّwe are dragged إِلىtoward ماwhat لاnot نَوَدُّwe desire وَنَعتَلُand we are roughly hauled
We turned back on our heels in matters that delight us,
We returned on our heels to what pleases us.
Dragged toward what we do not desire, and roughly hauled along.
We are pulled to what we don't like and limp away.

Their affection's skin is unblemished; there is no fault in them,
The loyal friends have no faults.
Except what the pretext-seeking faultfinder says.
Except what the slanderer who finds fault says.
فَزِعتُI turned for refuge إِلىto الأَبدالِsubstitutes بَعدَafter فِراقِهِمparting from them
فَأَعوَزَنيso I could not find ياO عَمروُAmr مَنsomeone whom أَتَبَدَّلُI could take instead
I turned to substitutes after parting from them,
I fled to the substitutes after they left.
But, O Amr, I could find no one to take in their stead.
Oh Amr, I am destitute, who can I turn to?
