وَمُقَبِّلٍand one kissing كَفّيmy palm وَدَدتُI wished بِأَنَّهُthat he
أَومىhe gestured إِلىtoward شَفَتَيَّmy lips بِالتَقبيلِwith a kiss
And one who kissed my palm—I wished that he
With a kiss on my hand, I wished
had directed his kiss toward my lips.
That to my lips he had inclined.
جاذَبتُهُI exchanged with him فَضلَthe surplus of العِتابِreproach وَبَينَناand between us
كِبَرُthe pride of المَلولِthe easily bored one وَرِقَّةُand the tenderness of المَملولِthe one wearied of
I exchanged further reproaches with him, and between us lay
I chided him; between us lingered
the bored one's pride and the tenderness of the one he had tired of.
Great bashfulness and tenderness feigned.
وَلَحَظتُand I noticed عَقدَthe knot of نِطاقِهِhis sash فَكَأَنَّماso it was as though
عُقِدَwas bound الجَمالُbeauty بِقُرطَقٍin a short tunic مَحلولِunfastened
And I noticed the knot of his sash: it was as though
I noticed his slender waist-band,
beauty had been bound in an unfastened tunic.
As though locked with an easy clasp.
جَذلانُjoyful يَنفُضُhe shakes out مِنfrom فُروجِthe openings of قَميصِهِhis shirt
أَعطافَthe curves of غُصنِa branch of البانَةِthe bān tree المَطلولِmoistened with dew
Joyful, he shakes out through the openings of his shirt
His open shirt would flutter free
the curves of a dew-moistened bān-tree branch.
Like boughs of the willow, supple and crisp.
مَنwho ليfor me بِهِhim وَالدارُand the house غَيرُnot بَعيدَةٍfar
عَنfrom دارِهِhis house وَالمالُand the wealth غَيرُnot قَليلِscant
Who will bring him to me, when my house is not far
If only he were mine, and our homes
from his house, and my wealth is not scant?
Not far apart, our means the same!
