وَلَرُبَّand indeed many a يَومٍday هاجَstirred مِنsome of طَرَبيmy rapture
وَلَقَدand indeed يَضيقُgrows strained بِغيرِهِwith other than it ذَرعيmy endurance
And many a day has stirred my rapture—
Many a day my heart is thrilled with joy
though on other days my patience wears thin—
Yet my life seems straitened by other things
مِنfrom مَنظَرٍa sight حَسَنٍbeautiful وَمِنand from نَغَمٍa melody
نَدعوهُwe call it قَيدَthe fetter of العَينِthe eye وَالسَمعِand hearing
by a lovely sight and by a melody
By beauteous sights and melodious sounds
we call the fetter of the eye and ear.
That call up tears to my eyes and ears
لَمّاwhen أَظَلَّovershadowed اللَيلُthe night مَجلِسَناour gathering
طُعِنَwas pierced الدُجىthe darkness بِأَسِنَّةِby the spearheads of الشَمعِthe candles
When night cast its shadow over our gathering,
When night's darkness falls upon our gathering
the darkness was pierced by the candles' spearheads.
The gloom is pierced by candles bright and clear
