وَكَأَنَّماand as though أولىthe first light of الصَباحِdawn وَقَدand already بَداappeared
وَكَأَنَّما أولى الصَباحِ وَقَد بَدا
فَوقَabove الطُوَيلِعِal-Tuwayli‘ راكِبٌa rider مُتَلَثِّمُwith his face veiled
فَوقَ الطُوَيلِعِ راكِبٌ مُتَلَثِّمُ
And it is as though the first light of dawn, as it appeared
As though at dawn's first light a rider veiled
Above al-Tuwayli‘, were a veiled rider.
Stands silhouetted on the distant hills,
وَأَذاعَand did away بِالظَلماءِwith the darkness فَتقٌa rift واضِحٌclear
وَأَذاعَ بِالظَلماءِ فَتقٌ واضِحٌ
كَالطَعنَةِlike a spear wound النَجلاءِgaping يَتبَعُهاfollows it الدَمُthe blood
كَالطَعنَةِ النَجلاءِ يَتبَعُها الدَمُ
And a clear rift dispelled the darkness,
His spear-thrust echoing, distinct and clear,
Like a gaping spear wound followed by blood.
Through the dark night, the blood in its wake spills
