وَوَصِيَّةٍand counsel خُلِفَتwas left behind لَناto us مِنfrom حازِمٍa prudent man
وَوَصِيَّةٍ خُلِفَت لَنا مِن حازِمٍ
وَطِىءَtrod الزَمانَtime سُهولَةًsmooth ground وَحُزوناand rugged terrain
وَطِىءَ الزَمانَ سُهولَةً وَحُزونا
And counsel bequeathed to us by a prudent man,
A legacy was left for us by the prudent Hazim
who trod time’s smooth ground and rugged terrain.
Time has passed gently and sorrowfully
لَمّاwhen تَعَذَّرَbecame impossible أَنto يُبَقِّيَkeep alive نَفسَهُhimself
لَمّا تَعَذَّرَ أَن يُبَقِّيَ نَفسَهُ
بَقَّىpreserved عَلَيناfor us رَأيَهُhis judgment المَأموناtrustworthy
بَقَّى عَلَينا رَأيَهُ المَأمونا
When keeping himself alive became impossible,
When he could no longer preserve himself
he preserved for us his trustworthy judgment.
He left us his safeguarded wisdom
