يَسيرُ عَلى البَيداءِ يَنتَهِبُ التُربا
And a band of riders, among whom the patches of darkness split apart,
On horses they dispersed across the dark desert,
travels across the desert, plundering the dust.
Riding the wilderness, plundering the dust.

They turn away from sleep's watering-place, and their eyes
They shun the valley's roses and springs,
are parched like camels awaiting their fifth-day drink, until they drink in the sweet view.
Their eyes bleary until the sweet sights are drunk.

If a faint sound startles them, it leaves them
If rumors startle and send them packing,
having already awakened the keen blades from their scabbards.
Though awoken from its lids, sleep still weighs down their lids.

They rode by night while night's horses were black, and halted to rest,
They went off leading the steeds of night, a dim host departing
having left them grey in morning's chase.
Fleeing with dawn's light still trailing embers behind.

The noonday heat of travel wafts its scent among their saddles,
The caravan's trudge moans between their mounts' packs
whenever the night breeze blows within its robe.
When the night's breeze stirs and gusts through its robe.
