Alas for him who hunts the gazelle out of greed!

The gazelle carried off that hunter’s wits.

Like a white pearl whose hour of loss had come

After it had filled the diver’s right hand.

Your nearness was nothing but flashing lightning,

Borne away by the clouds, and a shrinking shadow.

At dawn I set out with growing hope, like my love for you,

And at dusk return with dwindling fortune, like union with you.
