Ah, who will bring rain to the barren year?

And who will lead the host up into the highlands?

And who will bring the horses forward, shaggy,

and ride them, chestnut or bay?

On the morning of terror, he shoes them with necks

of enemies, and with curly locks.

Thundering, as though a raging thirst possessed them

for the clash of keen swords, or a consuming thirst.

He gives them free rein toward lofty deeds,

but in the face of humiliation he withholds the rein.

And who will drench war behind her ears,

and grapple with her in swordplay or mounted combat?

With the enemies' blood in battle, he replaces

his keen sword's baldrics and supporting straps.

Mankind's moon has fallen; he once rose

above the full moon in glory, and surpassed it.

So tell the heart to hold to reason and consolation,

and tell the eye to close its lid and sleep.

Calamities in which I do not call upon patience,

nor am I summoned to it, nor called.

Is it for the two eyes, grown sore from weeping,

or the two sides, restless upon the pillow?

As though a smith had made a branding iron glow

with his ember, and I had branded my heart with it.

He was of those who filled the nights

to their furthest bounds with generosity and might,

and drove into every calamity's gaping jaws

the points of bright swords and sharp blue spears.

If rain fell in lands of humiliation,

they departed from them and sought other lands for pasture.

They are the mountain looming over enemies,

when Time hurls it at those who approach.

They have ancestral honor: when you probe it,

it blazes like an ember and kindles fire-sticks.

They have pride that wards off humiliation,

and judgment that relieves severe distress.

And right hands that, when they rain down gifts,

make you think all people generous.

You see a young man's judgment among them obeyed,

and the words of a man among them asked for again.

They reached, in glory, the highest

of its summits, yet did not reach their goal.

The turns of the nights scattered them all,

and spare neither the gathered nor the solitary.

Your loss left no heart still hoarding

its burning grief, and no eye left dry.

As though mankind after you were in darkness,

or the days had been clad in mourning black.

And I had gained his friendship, but

Time gave it to me—and gave me nothing.

So if I did not weep for him through kinship whose

roots met, I wept for him out of affection.

It pains me to fold his memory away in neglect,

and leave him, drawing away or keeping distant.

    Take solace, Abu Ali: calamity,

despite all hindrances, attains what it desires.

It is Fate, whose hands wooed

Thamud from her strongholds, and Ad,

and brought low everyone who carried long spears,

and unhorsed everyone who rode fine steeds.

It bares the back of whoever among us has the most followers,

and storms the house of whoever among us has the tallest pillars.

Such is Time: if it spares a little,

it turns upon the remnant and returns.

And a man is harvesting its fruit—

until it turns into a thorn-bush he must strip.

And you are nearest to seeing its decline

when they say its increase has reached fullness.

And we know it will force bitterness down our throats,

by the sign that it lets us taste honeycomb.

Tears do nothing for the departed,

even if they wash the blackness from the eye.

And the days had girded you with a keen sword,

a grievous calamity for the enemies.

Then death vied with you for its two striking edges,

and seized the blade and tore off the baldric.

So call today upon someone other than Abu Shuja,

and death has deafened Abu Shuja to every call.

Something other than clouds drove high-humped herds toward him,

too proud to be led by halters:

stray gusts of lowland winds that kindled

lightning and thunder upon the peaks.

They were churned by those winds like a milk-skin, until,

when they rumbled, they opened the waterskins.

Lightning flickered along their two sides,

as though it unraveled and knotted itself again.

As though among them a herdsman of lowing she-camels

called out and stirred the white, hardy camels.

So, O people! I heap earth upon him,

and ask for repeated rains for his bones.

The watering will not reach him, but

I found in it cool relief for my heart.
