May calamities never shake you, O mountain!

And may ailments fall upon the foes, not upon you.

A lion may be fevered, not from abasement

before the passing nights, while the ibex stays unharmed.

May illness never visit him through whose health

our hope and expectation are kept sound.

    ذاكَ فُتورُ النَعيمِ وَالكَسَلُ

    May you be spared an ailment that alarms you;

that is but the languor of ease and indolence.

The star disappears, while you remain manifest,

and the sun grows dim, while you blaze.

You are neither overburdened nor uneasy,

while the full moon is poised to spring and shifts its place.

A fever—as a keen blade is forged, while in

its metal a skilled polisher is at work.

That has not harmed it when it is drawn:

necks and heads fall beneath it.

As long as time turns its arrows away from you,

then every wound that strikes us is a small matter.

You endure; may every calamity pass you by

toward the foes, and every intractable affliction.

God has guaranteed that you shall endure for us

unharmed—as have time and fortune's turns.

So what do the enemies say? May they never attain the

object of their desire, nor reach what they hoped for.

They could do nothing—may their fortunes never rise,

and may they neither escape afterward nor find refuge.

There is no fear: good fortune is ever advancing

through the nights, while you are in your prime.

Is a mountain's foot, firmly rooted,

ever feared to stumble or slip?

Then tremble before it, O heads,

and be firmly bound to the reins, O camels.

For nose-pegs have been prepared for you; among

them are tight bindings, girths, and hobbles.

Do not graze a grassy pasture whose shoots

are gleaming sword-edges and swaying slender spears.

    فَكَيفَ يَرضى وَذَودُهُ هَمَلُ

    His awe guards the slaves' grazing herds;

how could he be content while his camel-herd roams untended?

So tell a misguided man whom darkness has led along:

Where—to where has folly led you?

You hoped to climb without a foot

to glory—may bereavement terrify your mother!

You dreamed of it in the slumber of delusion—

the worst of dreams—and respite deceived you.

So beware the shafts of fate from a king:

whatever he bids time do is obeyed.

Do you jostle the sea in its roaring swell,

or contend with torrents, O trickle?

Impossible for a hoof-sore horse to outrun noble steeds,

or a timid one to ascend the height [word unclear] ahead of them.

You rushed to seize glory's spoil; then it was shaken

by long reaches and sinewy arms.

He saw rock-clefts and harvested their yield—bitter aloes:

Taste the harvest: the honey now looms over you!

An onslaught set the foes on their feet,

and straightened the bent, so they stood upright.

The sword already outran its reprover's rebuke,

when the keen blade and reproach raced each other.

Is he not of a people who built a nobility

unassailable, though their dispositions are gentle?

    مُذ صَعِدوا في العَلاءِ ما نَزَلوا

    Great old eagles whom good fortune bore aloft;

since they ascended to glory, they have never come down.

They stretched their glory's sinews, and rose

with them the towering ridges of virtue.

The lofty heralds of good tidings are their abodes,

as are the high summits and peaks.

They were a sky to us; no wonder

if they rained bounty in drops or in torrents.

The spears have long clung to their hands,

bending under their thrusts and straightening again.

As though their hands had sprouted for them

alongside the spear-shafts, where rushes grow.

Slaying at their hands is deemed sweet,

as though they raised to life those they slew.

They never neglected the grazing herds wherever they shepherded,

nor let affairs go to waste when they governed.

If they forever rouse their swords,

why have sheaths and robes been prepared?

Each one with claws showered down

upon the foes, yet he is a man.

People seek bounty in his places of resort,

and the roads converge at his door.

He seems too timid to turn his petitioner away,

yet when battle thickens, he is a hero.

His bough is dry when he withholds,

yet his hands are moist with bounty's dew.

How many a favor from you, like a perfume-caravan—its

passage betrays it, and its fragrance intoxicates!

You clothed me in it, to its seeker's fury,

and burning resentment was left within the ribs.

The enemy's scheming has begun to tug it

away from me—paralysis to the hands that tug!

Why, when I wish to be given more ornaments

from someone other than you, is my lot to be unadorned?

I see abundant spoils being driven along,

yet I have no she-camel among them, nor a he-camel.

And the worst thing the eager hunter returns with

is to return still shooting after the ibex has escaped him.

Where is the bounty of your generous hand for it,

and where are your former habits of lavish giving?

Let harm be ours, not yours, when the

calamity descends by night and death presses resolutely on.

May you endure for glory, with your life

fresh, and the wine-strainer of your honor moist.

No wonder if we guard you out of caution:

we are eyelids, and you are eyes.
