لاmay ... not يُبعِدِbanish اللَهُGod فِتياناًyoung men رُزِئتُهُمُI was bereft of them
رُزءَloss الغُصونِthe branches وَفيهاand in them الماءُthe sap وَالوَرَقُand the leaves
May God not banish the young men I have lost,
as one loses branches still full of sap and leaves.
إِنif يَرحَلواthey depart اليَومَtoday عَنfrom داريmy home فَإِنَّهُمُthen indeed they
جيرانُneighbors قَلبيmy heart أَقامواthey remained بَعدَماafter اِنطَلَقواthey departed
If they leave my home today, they are still
neighbors of my heart, remaining after they have gone.
بانواthey departed فَكُلُّso every نَعيمٍpleasure بَعدَهُمafter them كَمَدٌgrief
باقٍenduring وَكُلُّand every مَساغٍswallow بَعدَهُمafter them شَرَقُchoking
They have gone; every pleasure after them is grief
that endures, and every swallow after them brings choking.
أَراكَI see you تَجزَعُyou grieve لِلقَومِfor the people الَّذينَwho مَضَواpassed away
فَهَلthen, have ...? أَمِنتَyou felt secure عَلىabout القَومِthe people الَّذينَwho بَقواremained
I see you grieving for the people who have passed away;
are you then sure those who remain are safe?
لاnot يَلبَثُlingers المَرءُa person يُبليwears out شَرخَthe prime جِدَّتِهِhis freshness
مِنَof الزَمانِtime جَديدٌsomething new ماnot لَهُit has خَلَقُwear
A man does not last long: his youthful prime is worn away
by ever-new time, which never wears out.
هَدىguided الغَرامُpassionate love دُموعيmy tears فيalong مَسالِكِهِits paths
عَلَيهُمِfor them وَأَضَلَّتand led astray صَبرِيَmy patience الطُرُقُthe roads
Love guided my tears along its paths
for them, while the roads led my patience astray.
وَكَيفَand how يَنعَمُfinds comfort بِالتَغميضِin closing the eyes بَعدَهُمُafter them
عَينٌan eye أَعانَaided عَلَيهاagainst it الدَمعُtears وَالأَرَقُand sleeplessness
And how can closing bring comfort after them
to an eye against which tears and sleeplessness have joined forces?
إِنّيindeed I لَأُعجَبُI am truly amazed بَعدَafter اليَومِtoday مِنat كَبِدٍa liver
تَدمىbleeds لَهُمfor them كَيفَhow تَندىgrows moist وَهيَwhile it تَحتَرِقُburns
I am indeed amazed, after today, at a liver
that bleeds for them—how can it be moist while it burns?
