Shall I abandon the illustrious among my peers,

    bereft of helmets and armor?

    ما ضيهِمُ مُعوَزُ الرُجوعِ

    The nights drive them onward in companies;

the departed among them cannot return.

    They scattered, not by choice,

and moved on, not to homesteads.

I turned back in their wake against my will,

    after struggle, into resignation.

Heartache left a wound within my heart,

its blood concealed for as long as I live.

How often death has cheated us of a noble man,

and calamity contended for a champion!

They departed, yet I did not drain for them

my tears, nor melt my ribs.

And shall I pour out tears for enemies?

Then indeed I have tears to spare.
