Who will bring back to me my days

    at Jazʿ al-Samurāt,

    وَمِنىً وَالجَمَراتِ

    and my nights at Jamʿ,

    at Minā and the Jamarāt;

    and gazelles adorned,

    like gazelles unadorned,

    going forth in the robes

    of darkness, closely veiled,

    casting with their eyes—the

    wide, dark ones—before the pebbles?

Did they go to wound the heart,

or to slaughter the sacrificial camels?

How could I have entrusted my heart

to eyes that cannot be trusted?

    O hunter, how poorly

    you hunted the gazelles!

The herd escaped you, and your only

    provision was regret.

Oh, what a halt they made

beneath the shade of the salam trees—

a station gathering the young men

of love together with the maidens.

We exchanged laments, giving free rein

    to the speech of tears;

a gaze that left, in every one of us,

each eye troubled by a mote.

Many a one the Departure bore far from us—

    gazelle and oryx-doe alike!

Ah, for a neck that, all the way to the

    dwelling, kept turning back;

and for a passion that does not pass,

through a meeting that never comes.

    May Minā’s valley and

al-Khayf be drenched by morning clouds,

and may they water a time when the censurers

slept, and tale-bearers caused no fear,

    amid nights like pearls,

    made moon-bright by fair women.

    They planted deep within me

the growth of longing, bitter in its fruit.

Where is an enchanter for my passion,

    a physician for my complaint?
