بِأَجزاعِat the bends of الغَديرَينِthe two pools
A gazelle puts off paying what she owes me,
A gazelle fleeing my religion
at the bends of the two pools.
By the banks of the two valleys
رُهونيmy pledged possessions عِندَهاin her keeping تَغلَقُbecome forfeit
بَينَbetween الهَجرِestrangement وَالبَينِand parting
My pledges in her keeping are forfeit
She took my heart hostage there
between estrangement and parting.
Between estrangement and separation

That whimper, but never
beneath the smith's hammer.
Cross the blacksmith’s anvil

Ah, O glance I sent
Oh, the glance you sent
between the two camel-litters,
Between the two eyelids

وَأَحسَنتِand you did good إِلىto العَينِthe eye
today you have done the heart harm
You did wrong today to my heart
and done the eye good.
And did good for my eye

وَوَلّىand departed القَلبُthe heart بِالحَينِwith doom
So the eye returned with victory,
So the eyelid won
while the heart departed with doom.
While the heart retreated at once

So, O God, how often you are
Oh God, how much you wound
wounded, O my heart, by my eye,
My heart because of my eyes

and by the reproach of the two companions,
And the blame of both friends
and by the parting of the two close companions.
And between the two mixed ones

بِلاwithout قَولِthe words of العَذولَينِthe two reproachers
My heart inclined toward sober judgment,
Make my heart listen to dream
without a word from the two reproachers.
Without the words of the censurers
وَخَلَّفتُand I left الصِباyouthful folly خَلفيَbehind me

And I left youthful folly behind me,
And I left youth behind me
with both its companions subdued.
Obedient to the two mentors

Yet I have not passed thirty
And I have not reached thirty
by a year or two.
With a year or two years

So tell me today: what is your excuse,
So tell me today what is your excuse
O grayness in my two sideburns?
Oh white hair of the excusers

Ask the horses' charge about me,
Ask me to tour the running horses
and the mingling of the two dust-clouds,
And the twisted, roaring camels

You will see my resolve like a sword,
You will see my determination like a sword
honed on both cutting edges.
With sharpened two edges
أُجَلّيI dispel النَقعَthe battle-dust قَدalready صارَhas become
لِحاماًa weld بَينَbetween غارَينِtwo armies
I dispel the dust that has become
I provoked the she-camel until she became
a weld between two armies.
An inspirer between two caves
وَأَثنيand I turn aside سَنَنَthe course of الخَيلِthe horses
بِهَبهابِwith a swift mover السُرىnight travel لَينِsupple
And I turn the horses from their course
And I made examples with the horses
with a swift, supple night-traveler,
With the stirring of the pliant handholds
بِحَيثُwhere تُقَطَّعُis severed القُربىkinship
عَلىat أَيديthe hands of القَريبَينِthe two kinsmen
where kinship is severed
To the point that kinship is severed
at the hands of the two kinsmen,
At the hands of the two relatives

And the bent spear misses
what lies between the two brothers.
What is between the two beloveds

There you see the two kinsmen
You see the two relatives
paired in hatred.
Have become like two adversaries

The hand of Time hurled at me
The hand of fate has tossed
a calamity that is no trifle.
At me grave things not slight

I see the days driving
I see the days urging me
me along the worse of the two roads,
Toward the worse of two paths

as beneath a mays-wood saddle sped
As the horsemen have placed
a camel with both flanks swaying.
Under the table the two cushions
أُزَجّيI urge onward الحَظَّfortune كَاللاعِبِlike a player
I nudge my fortune onward, like a player,
I push fortune like a player
making it crawl despite exhaustion,
Slithering on the ground
كَماjust as زُجِّيَتِwas urged onward الرَجزاءُthe weak-kneed she-camel
زَحفاًcrawling بِعِقالَينِwith two hobbles
as a weak-kneed she-camel is urged onward,
As the scoundrels were pushed
crawling with two hobbles.
Crawling with two halters

يَme (pronoun ending) بِاللَيانِby delaying payment عَنfrom دَينيthe debt owed me

And this Time turns me aside
And this life inclines me
from the debt it owes me, by stalling,
With smoothness from my religion

and goes drawing water for the feeble,
And starts providing the debauched drunkard
sluggish man, using two buckets.
With two registers

وَليand for me نَطحٌa goring بِرَوقَينِwith two horns
For him, a sprinkling from its two horns;
It has a butt with its spear
for me, a goring by two horns.
While I have the butt of two spears
تُرىI wonder صَرفُthe course of المَقاديرِdestiny
مَتىwhen يَصحوwill it awaken مِنَfrom الأَينِweariness
I wonder: the course of destiny—
Do you see the turnover of fates
when will it wake from weariness?
When will it awaken from wine?
وَهَيهاتَand far from it! لَقَدindeed already أَغلَclosed (first part)

But far from it! It has already shut
Alas, it has locked
two doors barring livelihood.
The door of livelihood with two locks

ظِfortune (last part) قَدalready أَعياhas baffled الطَبيبَينِthe two physicians
So seek no remedy for fortune;
So do not seek remedy for fate
it has baffled the two physicians.
When it has wearied the two doctors

And if you reproach this Time,
And if you blame this life
one offense becomes two.
The fault becomes two faults
وَقَدand already طُلَّwas left unavenged دَمٌblood تَطلُyou demand (word begins)

بُهُit (completes 'you demand it') عِندَfrom الجَديدَينِthe two ever-renewed ones: night and day
And blood has gone unavenged, though you seek
And blood has been shed for long
its due from the two ever-renewed ones—night and day.
That is sought from the two swords
