O resting-place of the two standards amid the sands of the protected pasture,
O foot of the two landmark hills in the sands of the protected pasture,
I am owed debts by your gazelle, al-Nawār.
your shy gazelle owes me debts.
شَرَتِshe bought الفُؤادَthe heart رَخيصَةًcheap أَعلاقُهُits treasures

She bought the heart cheaply, though precious were its treasures,
She bought the heart, its treasures going cheap,
and the cheated one went away biting his fingertips.
and the cheated man went off biting his fingertips.
هَيهاتَfar from it! يَتبَعُنيfollows me إِلىtoward سُلوانِهِits solace

Never will there follow me, on the way to forgetting him,
How far from following me toward its solace
a heart the wide-eyed gazelles have struck.
is a heart struck by the wide-eyed gazelles!
سَنَحَتshe appeared لَناto us فيamong المُشرِقاتِthe radiant women عَشِيَّةًone evening
وَمِنَand among السِهامِthe arrows مَحاجِرٌeye sockets وَعُيونُand eyes
One evening she came into view among the radiant women,
She appeared to us among the radiant beauties one evening,
and among the arrows were eye-rims and eyes.
and eye sockets and eyes are among the arrows.
لاnot العَفُّthe chaste man عَفٌّchaste حينَwhen يَملِكُpossesses لُبَّهُhis mind
تِلكَthose اللِحاظُglances وَلاnor الأَمينُthe trustworthy man أَمينُtrustworthy
The chaste man is not chaste when his mind is mastered
The chaste man is not chaste when his mind is ruled
by those glances, nor does the trustworthy remain trustworthy.
by those glances, nor is the trustworthy man trustworthy.
لَوif أَنَّthat قَومَكَyour people نَصَّلواtipped أَرماحَهُمtheir spears
بِعُيونِwith the eyes of سِربِكَyour herd ماnot أَبَلَّrecovered طَعينُa spear-wounded man
If your people tipped their spears
Were your people to tip their spears
with the eyes of your herd, no one pierced would ever recover.
with the eyes of your herd, no wounded man would recover.
