وَلَقَدand indeed أَكونُI would be مِنَamong الغَوانيthe beautiful women مَرَّةًonce
بِأَعَزِّin the most cherished مَنزِلَةِplace of الحَبيبِthe beloved الأَقرَبِthe closest
Once, among the fair women, I held
the most cherished place of the closest beloved.
أَقتادُهُنَّI lead them بِفاحِمٍwith jet-black hair مُتَخايِلٍproudly flaunting
فَيُريبُنيso it troubles me وَيَرينُand it prevails ليfor me وَيَزينُand it is adorned بيby me
I drew them after me with proud, jet-black hair;
so it troubled me, won sway for me, and was adorned by me.
وَإِذاand when دَعَوتُI called أَجَبنَthey answered غَيرَnot شَوامِسٍshying away
خَفَفَthe haste of النِياقِthe she-camels إِلىtoward رُغاءِthe bellow of المُصعَبِthe untamed male camel
And when I called, they answered without shying away,
like she-camels hastening toward an untamed male's bellow.
فَاليَومَbut today يَلوينَthey turn الوُجوهَthe faces صَوادِفاًturning away
صَدَّthe shunning of الصَحاحِthe healthy animals عَنِaway from الطَلِيِّthe fawn الأَجرَبِmangy
But today they turn their faces aside,
as healthy beasts shun a mangy fawn.
وَإِذاand when لَطَفتُI am gentle لَهُنَّtoward them قالَsay عَواذِليmy reproachers
ذِئبُthe wolf of الغَضاةِthe ghada tree يُريغُseeks وُدَّthe affection of الرَبرَبِthe gazelle herd
And when I am gentle with them, my reproachers say:
'The wolf of the ghada tree seeks the gazelle herd's love.'
فَلَئِنand if indeed فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِلِمَّةٍof locks فَينانَةٍluxuriant
ماتَdied الشَبابُyouth بِهاin them وَلَمّاand not yet يُعقِبِleave an heir
And if I have been bereaved of luxuriant locks,
in which youth died and has not yet left an heir,
فَلَقَدthen indeed فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِكُلِّof every فَرعٍbranch باذِخٍtowering
مِنfrom عيصِthe ancestral grove of مُدرِكَةَMudrika الأَعَزِّthe noblest الأَطيَبِthe purest
I have indeed been bereaved of every towering branch
of Mudrika's noblest, purest grove.
قَوميmy people تَقارَعَتِclashed السِنونُthe years عَليهِمُupon them
فَثَلَمنَand they notched كُلَّevery فَتىًyoung man كَحَدِّlike the edge of المِقضَبِthe sharp sword
My people—the years battered against them,
and notched every youth, keen as a sword's edge:
شُعباًpieces مُفَرَّقَةًscattered يَطيرُflies فُضاضُهاtheir splinters
كَالقَعبِlike the wooden bowl مُنصَدِعاًsplit وَلَمّاand not yet يُرأَبِbe mended
scattered pieces, their splinters flying,
like a split wooden bowl, not yet mended.
هَتَفَcalled out الرَدىdeath بِجَميعِهِمto all of them فَتَتابَعواso they followed one another
طَلقَthe free release of العُطاسِsneezing بَنيsons of أَبٍa father وَبَنيand sons of أَبِa father
Death called to them all, and they followed one another,
swift as a sneeze—sons of one father and sons of another.
وَرَدواthey reached the water وَإِنّيand indeed I بَعدَهُمafter them كَظَمِيَّةٍlike a thirsty she-camel
تَسَلُshe asks القَوارِبَthe water-bound camels عَنabout بُلوغِreaching المَشرَبِthe watering place
They reached the water; after them I am like a thirsty she-camel,
asking the water-bound camels about reaching the watering place.
طَرَقَcame knocking الزَمانُtime بِكُلِّwith every خَطبٍcalamity بَعدَهُمafter them
فَإِذاso when رَأَيتُI see عَجيبَةًa marvel لَمnot أَعجَبِI am amazed
After them, Time came knocking with every calamity,
so when I see a marvel, I am not amazed.
