خُذيtake نَفسِيَmy soul ياO ريحُwind مِنfrom جانِبِthe edge of الحِمىthe protected pasture
فَلاقيthen meet بِهاwith it لَيلاًat night نَسيمَthe breeze of رُبىthe hills of نَجدِNajd
Take my soul, O wind from the protected pasture's edge,
and with it meet by night the breeze of Najd's hills.
فَإِنَّfor indeed بِذاكَin that الحَيَّencampment إِلفاًa beloved عَهِدتُهُI once knew him
وَبِالرَغمِand against the will مِنّيof me أَنthat يَطولَshould grow long بِهِwith him عَهديmy time since last meeting
For in that encampment is a beloved I once knew,
and, against my will, my time apart from him grows long.
وَلَولاand were it not for تَداوِthe healing of القَلبِthe heart مِنfrom أَلِمِthe pain of الجَوىburning love
بِذِكرِby remembering تَلاقيناour meeting قَضَيتُI would have died مِنَfrom الوَجدِpassionate longing
And were my heart not healed of the pain of burning love
by remembering our meeting, I would have died of longing.
وَياand O صاحِبيَّmy two companions اليَومَtoday عوجاturn aside, both of you لَتَسأَلاso you both may ask
رُكَيباًa little band of riders مِنَfrom الغَورَينِal-Ghawrayn (the two lowlands) أَنضاؤُهُمtheir worn-out mounts تَخذيhasten along
And, my two companions, turn aside today to ask
a little band of riders from al-Ghawrayn, whose worn-out mounts hasten on,
عَنِabout الحَيَّthe encampment بِالجَرعاءِat al-Jar'a جَرعاءِJar'a of مالِكٍMalik
هَلِhave...? اِرتَبَعواthey encamped for spring وَاِخضَرَّand grew green واديهِمُtheir valley بَعديafter my departure
about the encampment at al-Jar'a, Malik's Jar'a:
Have they encamped for spring, and has their valley grown green since I left?
كَأَنَّas though بِعَينيin my eye بَعدَهُمafter their departure غائِرَdeeply embedded القَذىthe grit
إِذاwhen أَناI لَمnot أَنظُرlook إِلىtoward العَلَمِthe mountain الفَردِthe solitary one
It is as though, since they left, grit were lodged deep in my eye,
whenever I do not gaze toward the solitary mountain.
شَمَمتُI smelled بِنَجدٍin Najd شيحَةًa wormwood plant حاجِرِيَّةًfrom Hajir
فَأَمطَرتُهاso I rained upon it دَمعيmy tears وَأَفرَشتُهاand I made a bed for it خَدّيmy cheek
In Najd I smelled a wormwood plant from Hajir,
so I rained my tears upon it and made my cheek its bed.
ذَكَرتُI recalled بِهاthrough it رَيّاthe fragrance of الحَبيبِthe beloved عَلىdespite النَوىseparation
وَهَيهاتَand far indeed! ذاthis يابُعدَO great distance! بَينِهِماbetween the two of them عِنديto me
Through it I recalled the beloved's fragrance despite separation,
yet this is far removed—how far apart the two are to me!
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَمَجلوبٌsurely brought لِيَto me الشَوقُlonging كُلَّماwhenever
تَنَفَّسَsighs شاكٍa sufferer أَوor تَأَلَّمَfeels pain ذوone possessed of وَجدِpassionate longing
And longing is surely brought to me whenever
a sufferer sighs, or one in love feels pain.
تَعَرَّضُappear رُسلُmessengers الشَوقِof longing وَالرَكبُand the caravan هاجِدٌasleep
فَتوقِظُنيso they awaken me مِنfrom بَينِamong نُوّامِهِمtheir sleepers وَحديme alone
The messengers of longing appear while the caravan sleeps,
so they awaken me alone from among their sleepers.
فَقُلتُso I said لِأَصحابيto my companions أَلاnot to تَتَزافَرواexchange sighs, all of you
رُوَيدَكُمُgently, all of you إِنَّindeed الهَوىlove داؤُهُits sickness يُعديis contagious
So I said to my companions, 'Do not exchange sighs;
easy now—love's sickness is contagious.'
وَماand not شَرِبَdrank العُشّاقُthe lovers إِلّاexcept بَقِيَّتيmy leavings
وَلاnor وَرَدواthey came to water فيin الحُبِّlove إِلّاexcept عَلىat وِرديmy watering place
And lovers have drunk nothing but my leavings,
nor, in love, have they come to water except at my watering place.
