نادَيتُهُI called to him بِالرَملِamid the sands وَالأَمرُand the matter ذَكَرgrave
وَقَدand already مَضىhad passed الوِردُthe watering وَأَعجَزَand proved too hard الصَدَرthe return from water
I called to him amid the sands, while the matter was grave.
I called him with the sand, though the matter was perilous,
The watering was already over, and the return proved too hard.
And the roses had passed, leaving my chest constricted.
ياO عَمرُوAmr ذاpossessor of الجُمَّةِthe flowing locks وَالوَجهِand the face الأَغَرّradiant
قُمِrise اِضطِراراًof necessity جاوَزَhas surpassed الأَمرُthe matter الخَبَرthe report
O Amr, with flowing locks and radiant face,
O Amr of the veil and the bright face,
Rise, of necessity: the matter has outstripped the report!
Rise up out of necessity, for the matter has gone beyond words.
فَقامَso he rose مَشزورَtightly twined القُوىthe sinews عَلىupon مِرَرstout twisted cords
كَأَنَّماas though ناطَhung عَلىupon الجيدِthe neck القَمَرthe moon
So he rose, his sinews tightly twined in stout cords,
So he rose, his strength sapped, stumbling,
As though he had hung the moon upon his neck,
As if he had tied the moon upon his neck.
مُضطَرِبَshifting الإِزرَةِthe manner of girding وَقّادَblazing النَظَرthe gaze
كَأَنَّماas though يَنظُرُhe peers مِنfrom وَقبَيthe two hollows of حَجَرa stone
His waist-wrap shifting, his gaze ablaze,
His gown fluttering, his gaze wandering,
As though he peered from two hollows in a stone.
As if he were looking from the loophole of a wall.
قَدحُstriking fire لِحاظٍglances كَمُطاراتِlike flights of الشَرَرsparks
يُلهِبُblazes فيin إِزارِهِhis waist-wrap إِذاwhenever نَظَرhe looks
Glances striking fire, like sparks sent flying,
A piercing glance, like sparks of fire,
He blazes in his waist-wrap whenever he looks.
Setting his gown aflame whenever he looked.
كَالصِلِّlike the viper إِنif جَرَّtrailed ذُباباهُits two sharp tips زَفَرhissed
أَوِor الغَريريِّthe Ghariri camel إِذاwhen عَجَّcried out هَدَرbellowed
Like a viper: when its two sharp tips trail, it hisses;
Like a hissing serpent, if its coils exhaled a groan,
Or a Ghariri camel: when it cries out, it bellows.
Or a snarling lion, if it roared.
جَرجَرَrumbled لَمّاwhen سيمَwas made to suffer ضَيماًwrong وَزَأَرand roared
جَرجَرَةَthe rumbling of العودِthe old camel بِلاwithout طولَlength of السَفَرthe journey
He rumbled when made to suffer wrong, and roared,
He growled angrily, having heard of injustice and cruelty,
An old camel's rumbling, without a long journey.
A deep growl, though the journey was not far.
فَرَدَّهاso he sent it back بَعدَafter العِراكِthe struggle وَالبَهَرand the panting
وَاليَومُand the day ذوpossessing مَزادَةٍa waterskin تَنضَحُoozes شَرّevil
So he sent it back after the struggle and the panting,
But he repelled it after the struggle and dazzle,
And the day bore a waterskin oozing evil,
And today there is an auction overflowing with evil,
حَتّىuntil رَمانيhe hurled at me بِهَواديهاwith its vanguard وَمَرّand passed on
مُبتَسِماًsmiling كَأَنَّماas though قَضىhad fulfilled وَطَرa desire
Until he hurled its vanguard at me and passed on,
Until it cast me into its valleys and passed me by,
Smiling, as though he had fulfilled a desire.
While he smiled as if he had fulfilled and crossed over.
