أُحِبُّكَI love you بِالطَبعِby instinct البَعيدِfar removed مِنَfrom الحِجىreason
وَأَقلاكَand I loathe you بِالعَقلِwith reason البَريءِfree مِنَfrom الخَبلَmadness
I love you by instinct, far removed from reason,
I love you with a nature far from pretense
And loathe you with a mind free of madness.
And I think highly of you with a mind free of madness
فَأَنتَso you are صَديقيmy friend إِنif ذَهَبتُI go إِلىto الهَوىpassion
وَأَنتَand you are عَدوّيmy enemy إِنif رَجَعتُI return إِلىto العَقلِreason
So you are my friend if I turn to passion,
So you are my friend if I go towards passion
And you are my enemy if I return to reason.
And you are my enemy if I return to reason
وَسِيّانِand both are alike عِنديto me مَنwhoever طَوانيenfolded me عَلىin جَوىًburning heartache
يُعَذِّبُtorments قَلبيmy heart أَوor طَوانيenfolded me عَلىin دَخلِhidden malice
And to me they are alike: one who enfolds me in burning heartache
And the two are the same to me, one who urges me to fervor
That torments my heart, or one who enfolds me in hidden malice.
That tortures my heart, or one who urges me to gain
وَماand not الحُبُّlove إِلّاexcept ذِلَّةٌabasement وَاِستِكانَةٌand submission
لِمَولىًto a master أَرىI see إِعزازَهُhis exaltation وَيَرىand he sees ذُلّيmy abasement
And love is nothing but abasement and submission
For love is nothing but humiliation and submission
To a master whose exaltation I behold, while he beholds my abasement.
To a master whom I see honored while I'm disgraced
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I خُيِّرتُI was given a choice مَنwhom أَمنَحُI grant الهَوىlove
لَماwould not اِختَرتُI chose أَنto أَهوىI love هَوىًa passion وَمَعيand with me عَقليmy reason
And if I were given a choice of whom to grant my love,
And if I were given a choice of who to give passion to
I would not choose to fall in love while my reason was still with me.
I would not choose to love a passion with my reason still with me
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it is the case that لاno رَأيَjudgment فيin الحُبِّlove لِلفَتىfor the young man
فَيَعلَمَso that he may know يَوماًone day ماwhat يُمِرُّmakes bitter وَماand what يُحليmakes sweet
But a young man has no judgment in love
Yet there is no choice in love for the young man
By which to know one day what brings bitterness and what brings sweetness.
To know one day what will pass and what will remain
وَلَوand if كانَthere were فيin العَشقِpassionate love اِختِيارٌchoice لَأَقصَرَتwould desist
قُلوبٌhearts عَنِfrom المَحبوبِthe beloved ماas long as ضَنَّhe was stingy بِالبَذلِin giving
And if there were any choice in passionate love, there would draw back
And if there was choice in passion, hearts would have shortened
Hearts from the beloved so long as he begrudged giving.
What they stingily gave to the beloved
وَلَمand has not يُحسِنِmaster الصَبُّthe lovesick lover التَقاضيclaiming one's due وَدونَهُand before him
غَريمٌa debtor مُسيءٌill-dealing لاnot يَمَلُّtires مِنَof المَطلِdelaying payment
And the lovesick lover has not mastered claiming his due, while before him
And the young man does not know how to bargain
Stands an ill-dealing debtor who never tires of delaying payment.
With an unfair creditor who never tires of demanding
