قُلSay لِلهَوامِلِto the strays فيin الدُناthe worlds ماwhat بالُكُمyour condition
كَالنائِمينَlike sleepers وَأَنتُمُwhile you are أَيقاظُawake
Say to the strays in the worlds: What ails you,
Tell those who linger in this world, why do you
Like sleepers, though you are awake?
Sleep as if awake, not knowing what's to come
أَينَwhere المَقاوِلُthe chieftains وَالجَبابِرُand the tyrants قَبلَكُمbefore you
فاضواthey passed away عَلىamid عِلَلِthe afflictions of الزَمانِtime وَفاظواand perished
Where are the chieftains and tyrants who came before you?
Where are the rulers and tyrants before you
They passed away amid time's afflictions, and perished.
Who passed away and their times have gone
مُتَنافِسينَcompeting with one another عَلىfor المُقامِremaining وَإِنَّماyet in truth
خَلفَbehind الرَكائِبِthe riding camels سائِقٌa driver مِلظاظُrelentlessly insistent
Vying to remain, though in truth
Competing for status, which is fleeting
Behind the riding camels is a relentless driver.
For there is only one Driver in the end
اللَبثُthe stay لَمحٌa flash وَالمُناخُand the halting-place مُحَفَّرٌdug out
وَالرَعيُand grazing خَطفٌa snatch وَالوُرودُand coming to water لَماظُa mere taste
The stay is a flash, and the halting-place a dug hollow;
This life is but a blink, and dwelling a grave
Grazing is a snatch, and coming to water a mere taste.
Grazing but a snatch, roses but thorns

Look at this very age:
Look upon this age with its own eyes
Your glances will return to you with loathing for it.
And it shall return your gaze with hatred
