ياO لَيلَةًa night كَرُمَgrew noble الزَماtime (word continues)
يا لَيلَةً كَرُمَ الزَما
نُcompletion of “time” بِهاthrough it لَوَif only اَنthat اللَيلَthe night باقِlasting
نُ بِها لَوَ اَن اللَيلَ باقِ
O night, time was ennobled
O night of blessed destiny
by you—if only the night would last!
If only the night would last
كانَthere was اِتِّفاقٌa meeting بَينَناbetween us
كانَ اِتِّفاقٌ بَينَنا
جارٍtaking place عَلىupon غَيرِother than اِتِّفاقِan arrangement
جارٍ عَلى غَيرِ اِتِّفاقِ
There was a meeting between us,
There would be accord between us
taking place without prior arrangement.
Flowing without discord
وَاِستَروَحَand he found relief المَهجورُthe forsaken one مِنfrom
وَاِستَروَحَ المَهجورُ مِن
زَفَراتِsighs هَمٍّsorrow وَاِشتِياقِand longing
زَفَراتِ هَمٍّ وَاِشتِياقِ
And the forsaken one found relief from
The forlorn would find respite
sighs of sorrow and longing.
From sighs of grief and longing
فَاِقتَصَّso he exacted redress لِلحِقَبِfor the ages المَواbygone (word continues)
فَاِقتَصَّ لِلحِقَبِ المَوا
ضيcompletion of “bygone” بَلnay تَزَوَّدَhe gathered provisions لِلبَواقيfor those remaining
ضي بَل تَزَوَّدَ لِلبَواقي
So he exacted redress for the bygone ages;
He would make up for lost time
nay, he gathered provisions for those to come.
And prepare for what's left
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen نَسَمَتblew gently رِياwinds (word continues)
حَتّى إِذا نَسَمَت رِيا
حُcompletion of “winds” الصُبحِthe dawn تُؤذِنُheralding بِالفِراقِparting
حُ الصُبحِ تُؤذِنُ بِالفِراقِ
Until, when there stirred the winds
Until the morning breeze blew
of dawn, heralding parting,
Heralding the dawn and separation
بَرَدَgrew cold السِوارُthe bracelet لَهاon her فَأَحso I warmed (word continues)
بَرَدَ السِوارُ لَها فَأَح
مَيتُcompletion of “I warmed” القَلائِدَthe necklaces بِالعِناقِwith an embrace
مَيتُ القَلائِدَ بِالعِناقِ
her bracelet grew cold, so I warmed
The bracelets chimed farewell
the necklaces with an embrace.
