I remembered you, not as one heedless,

Nor as one whose heart and soul turn away.

Because of you, I relive the snakebitten one's recurring pains.

So, O my heart's recompense—what requital it receives!

Recurrent stirrings from the disquieting pangs of pas-

sion: the day of my tears over them is tumultuous.

    إِذا مُلِئَ القَلبُ فاضَ اللِسانُ

    And heartache will not let me conceal heartache;

When the heart is filled, the tongue overflows.

And what good is an eye whose light has dimmed,

And a right hand whose fingers have been severed?

So, O trace of love, how have you remained,

Though the sight of the one I love has vanished?

And they said, 'Seek solace with her peers.'

But where is youth, and where is that time?
